AISA volleyball championships: Hooper, Edgewood, Coosa Valley win titles

Hooper Academy earned its first AISA volleyball championship on Wednesday with a win over Glenwood at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl Multiplex.

The second-ranked Colts (24-4) downed the Gators 25-14, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23 to secure the Class AA title after beating Bessemer Academy in quarterfinal play then downing Lee-Scott to reach the final.

“This team is a special group of young ladies,” said Hooper coach Jessi Hayes. “Their hard work and dedication is obvious. I am so proud of them and all of the work they put in to finally reach a goal they made. Glenwood is such a great team and program and are very well coached so this was a big accomplishment for Hooper.”

Libby Bressler set up the Colts big hitters with 41 assists, adding 2 aces while Annie Bressler, Grace Seale and Kaylee Midkiff combined for 42 kills to lead the attack. Bressler had 13 kills and 14 digs with an ace, Seale had 15 kills, 9 digs and 2 aces and Midkiff had 14 kills, 3 blocks and 4 digs.

KG Taylor had 15 digs, a kill, 3 aces and an assist while Henlee Garvin had 5 kills, an ace, an assist and 8 digs, Victoria Hagemann had 4 kills, 2 blocks and 2 digs and Ellie Pugh added an ace and dig.

Annie Bressler, Midkiff and Seale were named all-tournament.

In other AISA championships, top-ranked Edgewood (37-2) won its fifth straight title, beating Lowndes Academy 25-19, 25-11, 25-18 and Coosa Valley (17-4) dropped the first two sets and rallied to beat 2022 champion South Choctaw 24-26, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 17-15 for the Class A title.

Edgewood beat Pickens Academy in quarterfinal action and Macon East in semifinal play. Alabama commit Lindsey Brown, Madison Martin and Avery White were selected all-tournament for the Wildcats.

Brown had 36 kills, 40 assists, 6 aces, 12 digs and 2 blocks while White had 25 kills, 36 assists, an ace, 8 digs and a block and Martin had 23 kills, an assist, 9 aces, 5 digs and 8 blocks.

Coosa Valley downed Snook Christian in the quarterfinals and Escambia Academy in semifinal action. Coosa Valley all-tournament selections were Libero Madison Morris, setter Kadence Fields and outside hitter Michelle Alverson. Outside hitter Chyanne Kuhn was also key for the Rebels.
