Reports: Army to join AAC as football-only member in ’24

Army will join the American Athletic Conference as a football-only member in 2024, according to multiple reports.

The Black Knights have played as an independent for most of their history, save a 7-year stint in Conference USA from 1998-2004. The move to the AAC would put them in the same league as rival service academy Navy, as well as schools such as UAB, Memphis, Tulane and SMU.

The AAC is playing as a 13-team football league this season, following the departure of Cincinnati, Central Florida and Houston to the Big 12. The American added UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Rice, North Texas and Texas-San Antonio from CUSA this past offseason.

ESPN is reporting that the annual Army-Navy game will remain intact as a non-conference game despite the Black Knights’ move to the AAC. The Army-Navy game is traditionally played a week after the conference championship games, but should both schools qualify for the AAC title game in 2024 or beyond, they would play each other in back-to-back weeks.

Army joining the AAC will leave only three FBS independents: Notre Dame, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Army plays in the Patriot League in sports other than football.

An official announcement on the move is expected on Wednesday afternoon.
