Fire alert reinstated for all of Alabama’s counties

The Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) today re-issued a Fire Alert for all of Alabama’s 67 counties.

In 32 northern counties roughly north of Interstate 20, no burn permits will be issued. In 35 counties south of Interstate 20, certified prescribed burn managers may obtain a one-day burn permit. There will be no exceptions to this rule, according to the AFC.

Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be prosecuted for committing a Class B misdemeanor.

According to the AFC, wildland firefighters have responded to 111 wildfires over the last week that left more than 1,881 acres of Alabama forestland scorched. In addition, no rain is forecast for the next week, worsening the state’s ongoing drought conditions.

To report a wildfire, call the Alabama Forestry Commission at (800) 392-5679. For more information, visit the AFC website.
