Jonathan Allen (expletive) frustrated with Washington

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen just needed to be asked the question in the locker room after a 14-7 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday: Does it get frustrating?

“(Expletive) yes, it does,” Allen said. “I’m (expletive) tired of this (expletive). (Expletive) tired of this (expletive). It’s been seven (expletive) years of the same (expletive). I’m tired of this (expletive).”

Since Allen joined Washington from Alabama as a first-round choice in the 2017 NFL Draft, the team has posted a 42-62-1 record, lost its only playoff game and owns a 3-4 record in 2023 after a 2-0 start.

On Sunday, the Giants offense scored two touchdowns in the first half after scoring none in the first halves of their first six games this season.

Trailing 14-0 at halftime, Washington opened the second half with a touchdown run by former Alabama ball-carrier Brian Robinson Jr. But the Commanders’ final two possessions ended with a blocked 27-yard field-goal attempt and an incomplete fourth-down pass at the New York 7-yard line.

New York sacked Washington quarterback Sam Howell six times. The Commanders QB has been sacked an NFL-worst 40 times in seven games.

“They whooped our ass plain and simple,” Allen told JP Finlay of WRC-TV in Washington. “Got to be better.”

The Giants moved their record to 2-5 by beating Washington two weeks after the Chicago Bears got their first victory of the season by downing the Commanders 40-20. The Bears held a 24-point halftime lead in that game.

“I think it’s just a lack of focus on our part,” Allen said, “a lack of attention to detail, not starting fast and creating holes that are too big to overcome in the second half.”

Although Allen and former Crimson Tide teammate Daron Payne give Washington a Pro Bowl tandem of defensive tackles, only one defense has yielded more yards and just two have given up more points than the Commanders in 2023.

Already 0-2 in NFC East play, Washington plays another division rival on Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles visit FedEx Field.

The Commanders scored a touchdown on the last play of the fourth quarter against Philadelphia on Oct. 1, but came away with a 34-31 overtime loss to the Eagles.

Philadelphia leads the NFC East at 6-1.

“Get our minds right and get ready to play (expletive) Philadelphia,” Allen said of Washington’s outlook his week.
