Virginia’s stunning upset of previously unbeaten North Carolina on Saturday night contained one very heartwarming storyline.

Mike Hollins, who was wounded in the 2022 shooting that killed three of his teammates, scored three touchdowns as the Cavaliers knocked off the 10th-ranked Tar Heels 31-27 in Chapel Hill. Hollins ran for 66 yards on 15 carries, including touchdowns of 11, 3 and 1 yards for Virginia, which beat an FBS team for the first time this season.

Christopher Darnell Jones — a former Virginia walk-on football player who was still a student at the school — shot and killed Cavaliers football players D’Sean Perry, Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler in a parking garage shortly after they and several other students had returned from a class trip to Washington, D.C. last November. Hollins was shot in the back, and spent a week hospitalized, undergoing two rounds of surgery and spending time on a ventilator.

Virginia canceled its final two games of the 2022 season as a result of the shooting. Hollins returned to the team in time for spring practice and had played in five of six games this season, but had just 70 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries prior to Saturday.

The victory improved Virginia to 2-5 overall, 1-2 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 6-1, 3-1.
