Bought Hefty or Great Value recycling trash bags? You may be in line for settlement money
If you’ve purchased some types of Hefty or Great Value trash bags, you may be in line for a share of a class action settlement.
Reynolds Consumer Products settled an Illinois lawsuit that alleged the company misled consumers by promoting that some Hefty and Great Value trash bags were recyclable when they were not, USA Today reported. Reynolds did not admit fault but has agreed to pay up to $3 million to settle the claims, as well as reformulate the bags to make them recyclable or remove those claims from packaging.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible for a part of the settlement if you purchased certain Hefty or Great Value brand recycling bags from July 20, 2018 to Aug. 30, 2023. Generally, the covered products include clear and blue transparent recycling bags sold under the Hefty or Great Value labels, according to the settlement website. Opaque black and white-colored trash bags are excluded.
You can see a full list of the brands included in the settlement here.
Under the terms of the settlement, claimants can receive $2 per product purchased with a limit of $12 for those who cannot provide proof of purchase. Proof of purchase is required for every claim over six products with a limit of 25 claims – or $50 – for those who can show they bought the products.
The deadline to submit a claim is Dec. 13. You can submit your claim here.
