Birmingham officer injured when cruiser hit by suspected DUI motorist on I-65
A Birmingham officer was injured overnight when an SUV crashed into a police cruiser on Interstate 65.
Just after midnight, two North Precinct officers in separate patrol cars were blocking traffic for a disabled vehicle on I-65 north just before the Daniel Payne Drive exit when an SUV hit one of the patrol cars.
The officer who wasn’t injured was able to tell 911 dispatchers what happened, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported the injured officer to the hospital to be evaluated.
The driver of the SUV was taken into custody on the suspicion that he was driving under the influence. He was booked into the Birmingham City Jail shortly before 3 a.m. and remains held.
Fitzgerald said they will pursue criminal charges.
