Class 5A No. 4 Pleasant Grove rolls to shutout win over Carver-Birmingham

Pleasant Grove showcased its offensive prowess as the fourth-ranked Spartans rolled to a 47-0 victory over Carver-Birmingham in Thursday’s Class 5A, Region 5 matchup.

Pleasant Grove (7-1, 5-1) outgained the Rams on offense, 481-104, and collected three sacks and 10 tackles-for-loss on defense.

The Spartans built a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter on consecutive 10-play drives, capping each with a 2-yard rushing touchdowns from Collin Moore and Jordan Smith. They increased the advantage to 21-0 early in the second quarter on Moore’s second rushing score of the game.

Pleasant Grove quarterback Eric Handley went to work on the next three drives and completed 10 consecutive passes at one point in the second quarter. He threw his first touchdown on a short pass to Smith, followed by a 31-yard strike to Clarence Taylor. Aaron Tift capped the first-half scoring with a 24-yard touchdown reception inside the final minute of the first half.

Carver-Birmingham (4-5, 1-5) was held to a single possession and only 10 yards in the second half as a running clock was initiated with the Spartans leading 41-0 to open the third quarter. Pleasant Grove went three-and-out on its only drive of the third quarter and reserve running back Dayjuan Tuggle broke loose for a 79-yard touchdown run on the final play of the game.

Star of the game: Handley. The senior quarterback completed his work in the first half and finished 17-of-20 passing for 296 yards and three touchdowns.

“We need to be smooth. We come out every week and focus on ourselves and try to execute the game plan. Obviously, tonight, we played a pretty good ball game on both sides, but we got a lot of stuff we need to clean up. Great team win tonight,” he said.

By the numbers: 12, the number of wins for Pleasant Grove in the series, which it now leads 12-0. …5, the number of consecutive seasons that Pleasant Grove has clinched at least the regional second seed under Darrell LeBeaux.

Stat sheet: Pleasant Grove – Moore led the rushing effort with 10 attempts for 57 yards and a pair of touchdowns, followed by Smith with four carries for 23 yards and a score and an 8-yard touchdown reception. Taylor finished with three receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown and Tift had four catches for 91 yards and a score. Jaden Walton and Monterrius Towns had a combined eight receptions for 74 yards. Carver-Birmingham – DJ Wade finished 16-of-26 for 109 yards and Steven Sigler had five catches for 39 yards, followed by Tman Threatt with six receptions for 36 yards. The Rams had negative rushing yardage with both running backs combining for only five yards while Wade had a loss of 10 yards.
