5 takeaways: South Alabama 55, Southern Miss 3

Is two in a row enough to call it a trend?

South Alabama demolished a Sun Belt Conference for the second straight game Tuesday night, hammering Southern Miss 55-3 at Hancock Whitney Stadium. The Jaguars (4-3 overall, 2-1 Sun Belt) had blistered Louisiana-Monroe 55-7 in their previous outing.

We won’t know the answer for a while, as South Alabama now gets another lengthy break before hosting Louisiana on Oct. 28. Before that, here are 5 takeaways after the Jaguars walloped the Golden Eagles:

1. The way South Alabama beat ULM was not a fluke

The Jaguars’ victories over the Warhawks and Golden Eagles were strikingly similar. Not only did South Alabama score 55 points in both wins, but it scored on nearly every possession in both and did not punt in either game. It’s worth noting that ULM and Southern Miss are probably the two worst teams in the Sun Belt, but the Jaguars have taken care of business the last two times out, which is what good teams do.

2. La’Damian Webb is finally healthy and rolling

Webb clearly was still recovering from offseason surgery heading into the season, but he’s starting to hit that extra gear the last two games. Against ULM and Southern Miss, Webb has rushed for 202 yards and five touchdowns — including a school-record-tying four scores vs. the Golden Eagles. The Jaguars need a healthy and effective Webb to have a chance to beat the top teams in the Sun Belt, which they didn’t always have last year.

3. South Alabama passing game developing beyond Caullin Lacy

Lacy extended his program record with a sixth-straight 100-yard game on Tuesday, but had more help in the receiving game than he has at any point since Devin Voisin went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 2. Jamaal Pritchett had a career night with 122 yards on five receptions, while tight ends Lincoln Sefcik and DJ Thomas-Jones combined for nine catches and 97 yards. Quarterback Carter Bradley also continues to play at a high level, with back-to-back 300-yard games.

4. The Jaguars’ defense has been excellent as well

The offense has gotten most of the headlines, but the South Alabama defense has been particularly stifling the last two games as well. The Jaguars have allowed just one touchdown, and 10 points overall. Southern Miss did not cross the 50-yard line until the third quarter, and had nearly as many penalty yards (25) as total yards (26) in the first half. The Golden Eagles were at 81 yards of total offense until a late-game drive against the Jaguars’ third-team defense (which still ended in a turnover).

5. Southern Miss situation continues to deteriorate

Will Hall looked like a solid hire and a natural fit when he took over the Golden Eagles in 2021, but his team has completely collapsed in Year 3. Southern Miss has had some injury issues (especially in the defensive secondary), but looked like a team ready to quit in the second half vs. South Alabama. The Golden Eagles are looking at probably finishing 2-10 or maybe 3-9, and it’s an open question as to whether or not Hall will be given a fourth season to turn things around.
