For 22 years, Lisa Bates and Johnny Howell have roamed the sidelines of Sand Rock volleyball.

The duo quietly celebrated win No. 800 with a victory over West End in AHSAA area tournament play on Tuesday.

“I didn’t tell the girls and they don’t even know,” said head coach Bates, who did tell assistant Howell about the milestone. “Johnny loves this program and loves these girls so its special to have all those wins together. Not too many people have assistant coaches with you for 22 years so it’s pretty special.”

Tuesday was the first day for AHSAA area tournaments with teams playing a single elimination format to determine each area winner and runnerup.

The top two from each area advance to super regional sites with play Oct 25-27.

Each super regional tournament is comprised of 104 teams with the South Super Regional at Montgomery’s Multiplex at the Cramton Bowl while Huntsville’s Von Braun Center hosts the North Super Regional.

Class 6A-1A areas 1-8 along with Class 7A areas 1-4 play in Montgomery while Class 6A-1A areas 9-16 and Class 7A areas 5-8 play in Huntsville.

Four teams from each of seven classes at both sites advance to the Elite Eight championship tournament beginning on Oct. 31 at the Birmingham Crossplex with state championships decided next door at the Bill Harris Arena on Nov. 1-2.

Class 2A sixth-ranked Sand Rock (44-16) beat Gaston 25-6, 25-13, 25-12 in one semifinal while West End beat Collinsville 25-17, 25-14, 25-19 in the other. The Wildcats downed West End 25-22, 25-15, 25-8 for the title – its fourth straight area crown – with West End advancing as runnerup.

Katelyn St.Clair had 33 kills, 19 digs and 2 blocks to lead the Wildcats wile Rylin St.Clair had 57 assists, 5 aces and 3 blocks.

Zoey Handy added 18 kills and 2 blocks, Chloe Stephens had 32 digs and 8 aces and Bethany Davis had 9 kills, 22 digs and 4 aces.
