Did the New York Jets defense embarrass Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts on Sunday?

The Jets defeated the Eagles 20-14 on Sunday to give Philadelphia its first loss of the 2023 NFL season.

Hurts completed 28-of-45 passes for 280 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions and ran for 47 yards and one touchdown on eight carries against New York.

“Thought the defense, per the usual, outstanding,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “Through these first six weeks, we’ve played a gauntlet of quarterbacks. And I know we haven’t gotten all wins, but we’ve embarrassed all of them. Just really, really proud of the defense and its resolve.

“I thought (New York defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich) and his staff had an excellent game plan, down three corners, four of our six corners. I thought our D-line was good in terms of keeping that kid in the pocket. He’s a handful — Hurts, their O-line, their receivers. I thought our guys battled all the way through.”

Hurts followed the Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen, Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott, New England Patriots’ Mac Jones, Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Denver Broncos’ Russell Wilson on the Jets’ schedule of quarterbacks through six games this season.

At his postgame press conference, Hurts didn’t express embarrassment. His recurring point was the key coming out of the loss for the Eagles would be how they responded to it, and the former Alabama standout expressed confidence that Philadelphia would emerge from defeat a stronger team.

“It’s all about how you respond to it,” Hurts said. “I got a feeling we’ll come in with some great intensity. Some of these things, they build character. I say that all the time. It truly builds character. This team just has to respond the right way. …

“It’s just a matter of how we respond. That is the No. 1 focus point. That takes great preparation, intensity, mental focus.”

The game was the second of his NFL career in which Hurts threw three interceptions, joining a 13-7 loss to the New York Giants on Nov. 28, 2021. But Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni didn’t blame all three picks on the Eagles QB.

“The turnovers were all, you know, it was all something different – each one of them,” Sirianni said on Monday. “It wasn’t all on one guy. Jalen gets three interceptions to his name, but they’re not all on him. In fact, I only saw one of them that was on Jalen that he’ll want back. The other ones were on other things. I’m not going to sit here and say, ‘This was this, this was on this.’ One of them was on me.”

One of the Jets’ interceptions ended up in the hands of defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who got the first interception of his NFL career off his former Alabama teammate.

Williams didn’t agree the Jets had embarrassed Hurts – or any of the quarterbacks that New York had faced — after being told of Saleh’s assertion.

“All the quarterbacks we’ve played have been super amazing,” Williams said. “I don’t want to say embarrassed. But we just focus on playing us as a defense. We got a goal, and our goal is to be the No. 1 defense in the NFL. Our goal is to make the playoffs, and we’re just trying to focus on that and get better every single day so we can achieve that.”

Among the NFL’s 32 teams, the New York defense ranks 13th in points allowed per game at 19.8 and 22nd in yards allowed per game at 351.8.

The Jets enter their bye week with a 3-3 record. New York plays next on Oct. 29 against the New York Giants.

At 5-1, the Eagles play the Miami Dolphins at 7:20 p.m. CDT Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. NBC will televise the game.
