HS volleyball update: McGill-Toolen, Spanish Fort win tournament titles

McGill-Toolen continued its impressive late-season play, earning the Margaret Blalock Tournament title on Saturday.

The Class 7A third-ranked Dirty Dozen (38-8) won eight matches last week, sweeping Baker and second-ranked Enterprise in regular season best-of-five action then won six straight matches in Blalock play at Homewood High School without dropping a set in best-of-three action.

McGill-Toolen swept Sparkman and Helena in Blalock Friday pool play then beat Chelsea and Class 5A third-ranked Alexandria in Saturday pool action. The Dirty Dozen earned a Gold Bracket first round bye then downed Class 7A ninth-ranked Vestavia Hills in semifinal play and beat Class 6A top-ranked Mountain Brook 25-20, 25-17 for the championship.

McGill-Toolen has won 15 straight matches without losing a set since a 3-2 loss to St. Paul’s on Oct. 3. The Dirty Dozen also won the Battle of Old Shell Road Tournament the previous weekend, beating St. Paul’s for the title.

Paris McQuirter paced the front row offense with 82 kills, adding 9 digs and 9 blocks while Emma Moore had 58 Kills, 5 aces, 21 digs and 24 blocks.

Mamie Fromdahl set up the big hitters with 101 assists, adding 10 kills, 8 aces, 28 digs and 5 blocks.

Top-ranked Bob Jones (47-2) was 7-1 with regular season wins over Hazel Green, Spain Park and Pelham and beating Faith Academy, St. Luke’s, Tuscaloosa County and West Morgan and losing to Montgomery Academy in Gulf Shores’ Shrimp Festival Tournament.

Kennedy Vaughn had 72 kills, 17 digs and 6 blocks, Meg Jarrett had 75 digs, 28 assists and 13 aces, Rachel Mecklenburg had 93 assists, 51 digs, 8 blocks, 39 kills and 7 aces and Eliza Tyrrell had 35 kills, 12 blocks, 7 aces and 16 digs.

Second-ranked Enterprise (35-8) was 3-3 with a regular season loss to McGill-Toolen and beating Prattville Christian, Elberta and Madison County and losing to Daphne and Spanish Fort in Gulf Shores’ Shrimp Festival Tournament play.

Jadyn Britton had 43 kills and 38 digs, Morgan Williams had 26 kills, 31 blocks and 5 aces and Alivia Freeman had 38 kills and 21 blocks.

Fourth-ranked Thompson (31-6) won five matches beating Hewitt Trussville, Arab, Muscle Shoals twice and Clay-Chalkville.

Chloe Mittelstadt had 42 kills with a .370 attack percentage, 23 digs, 7 aces and 5 blocks, Hannah Drexel had 17 kills with a .308 attack percentage and 6 blocks, and Kenzly Foote had 25 kills, a 2.17 passer rating, 9 aces and 34 digs.

Fifth-ranked Huntsville (31-6) beat James Clemens.

KeAra Bowen had 22 kills, 5 blocks and 2 Digs and Kennedy Moss had 12 Kills, 2 blocks, 22 Digs and 2 Aces.

Sixth-ranked Oak Mountain (23-15) was 6-2 with wins over Hoover, Helena, Hartselle, Ramsay and Montgomery Catholic and losses to Briarwood and Vestavia Hills.

Lauren Schuessler had 17 aces, a 2.13 passer rating, 51 kills with a .214 attack percentage, 8 blocks, 72 assists and 79 digs and Mabrey Whitehead had 12 aces, a 1.95 passer rating, 57 kills with a .225 attack percentage, 2 blocks, 3 assists and 48 digs.

Ninth-ranked Vestavia Hills (26-12) was 4-2 with a regular season win over Chelsea and beating Homewood, McAdory, Oak Mountain and losing to Bayside and McGill-Toolen in the Margaret Blalock Gold Bracket semifinal.

Audrey Vielguth had 16 aces and 78 digs while Jill Davis had 13 blocks, Millie Burgess had 64 kills and Jordan Madsen had 35 kills.

Auburn (20-20) was 4-3 with regular season wins over Columbus (Ga.) and Baker and beating Baldwin County and Fayette County and losing to Fairhope, Spanish Fort and

Mobile Christian in Gulf Shores’ Shrimp Festival Tournament.

Kambell Fetner had 32 kills, Leah Beason had 27 kills and Mackenzie Farr had 21 Kills.

Chelsea (19-20) was 2-5 with wins over Alabama Christian and Sparkman and losses to Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Briarwood, McGill Toolen and Helena.

Lauren Buchanan had 105 kills, 7 blocks, 7 assists, 43 digs and 12 aces, Cara Belcher had 6 aces, 21 kills, 102 assists and 41 digs and Kaleigh Hall had 32 kills, 14 blocks, 2 assists and 5 digs.

Daphne (27-24) was 7-4 with wins over Hoover, Westminster Christian, St. Michael, Baldwin County, Prattville Christian, Elberta and Enterprise and losses to St. Paul’s, Fairhope, Lawrence County and Madison County.

Ella Lomax had 102 Kills, 57 Digs and 15 Aces, Charlotte Mekkers had 77 Kills with a .348 attack percentage, 20 Digs, 17 Blocks and 11 Aces and Ally Quijas had 101 Digs, 22 Assists and 6 Aces.

Setter Lucy McCoy surpassed 2,000 career assists and coach Casey Craig earned career win No. 100.

Fairhope (40-14) was 7-2 at Gulf Shores’ Shrimp Festival Tournament, beating Foley, Daphne, Fayette County, Baldwin County, Auburn, St. Luke’s and Lawrence County and losing to Spanish Fort and Montgomery Academy.

Peyton Frazer had 44 kills, 6 blocks, 9 digs and 4 aces, Libby Rogers had 120 assists, 68 digs, 27 kills and 5 aces and Abby Nelson had 94 digs, 42 assists and 12 aces.

CLASS 6A

Top-ranked Mountain Brook (37-5) was 5-1 at the Margaret Blalock Tournament, beating Alabama Christian, Hewitt-Trussville, Alexandria, Helena and Bayside and losing to McGill-Toolen in the championship.

Alice Garzon had 28 kills, 4 aces, 8 blocks and 5 assists, Hannah Parant had 22 kills, 14 aces, 4 blocks and 80 assists, Mae Mae Beatty had 25 kills, 2 aces, 3 assists and 29 digs, Ella Kate Wright had 6 aces, 12 assists and 38 digs and Annie Lacey had 19 kills and 6 blocks.

Second-ranked Spanish Fort (56-7) won 11 matches last week, including capturing Gulf Shores’ Shrimp Festival Tournament. The Toros beat Elberta and Fairhope in regular season play then downed Pelham, Saraland, Sylacauga, Austin, Westminster Christian, Auburn, Enterprise, Gulf Shores and Montgomery Academy for the Shrimp Festival championship.

Carlyn McAllister (tournament MVP) had 65 kills, 67 digs, 14 aces and a 2.34 passer rating, Alexis Belarmino had 212 assists, 52 digs, 19 kills and 4 aces, Reece Varden had 73 kills, 19 blocks and 18 digs, Taylor Ishmael had 66 kills, 12 blocks and 11 digs and Delaney Clough had 117 digs, 13 assists and 6 aces.

Reece Varden picked up career No. 1,500 and currently has 1,540 kills while Delaney Clough surpassed the 1,000 career digs this season and has 1,325 and Elyse McKinney reached career dig No. 1,000 and has 1,025.

Third-ranked Bayside (40-8) was 5-1 with a regular season win over Spain Park and beating McAdory. Homewood and Vestavia Hills in Margaret Blalock Tournament pool play and beating Montgomery Catholic before losing to Mountain Brook in Gold Bracket semifinal play.

Maysie Douglas had 29 kills, 12 digs and 3 aces, Blakeley Robbins had 108 assists, 15 kills, 20 digs, 4 aces and 2 blocks, MK Whitehurst had 5 aces and 54 digs, Hayley Robinson had 28 kills and 5 blocks, Grier Broughton had 14 kills, 30 digs and 3 blocks, Georgia McInnis had 15 kills, 7 digs and 4 blocks and Misty Kate Smith had 5 aces and 10 kills.

Douglas picked up her 1000th career kill in the tournament against McAdory.

Sixth-ranked Pelham (23-13) was 5-3 with wins over Saraland, West Point, Hoover, Shades Valley and Albertville and losses to Bob Jones, Spanish Fort and Gulf Shores.

Camryn McMinn had 70 kills, 44 digs, 8 blocks and 8 aces, Londyn Wynn had 49 kills, 46 digs, 8 blocks and 12 aces and Kylee Hester had 150 assists, 37 digs, 6 aces and 6 blocks.

Eighth-ranked Pike Road (32-5) won three matches, beating Prattville, Montgomery Catholic and Prattville Christian.

Allie Lovrich had 17 kills, 17 digs, 2 assists and 5 aces, Taylor Robinson had 23 kills, 2 blocks and 5 digs, Brely Dees had 2 aces, 6 assists and 21 digs, Jada Gresham had 10 kills and 6 blocks, Rylie Fureigh had 14 digs and 33 assists and Caroline Davis had 10 aces, 34 assists and 16 digs.

Ninth-ranked Buckhorn (34-17) was 3-1 with wins over West Morgan, Sparkman and Florence and a loss to Lawrence County.

Hannah Shafer had 32 kills and 41 digs and Addi Layne had 79 assists, 15 digs, 2 kills and 3 aces.

Homewood (15-22) was 2-3 with wins over Chelsea and McAdory and losses to Vestavia Hills, Bayside and Hartselle.

Kamryn Coleman had 65 assists, 36 digs, 7 aces, 7 kills and 4 blocks, Mira McCool had 28 kills, 16 digs, 6 blocks and 3 aces and Emerson Buck had 43 digs.

John Carroll (12-23) beat Mortimer Jordan and lost to Briarwood.

Marion Haskell had 22 kills, Mady Kirkpatrick had 18 kills and 8 aces and Kaitlin Gilchrist had 9 kills and 7 aces.

Saint James (28-10) was 3-1 with wins over Providence Christian, Prattville Christian and Brewbaker Tech and a loss to Trinity.

Kaylin Corley had 37 kills, 8 aces, 5 assists and 39 digs, Ava Card had 40 kills, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 31 digs and Tatiana Shuford had 3 aces, 72 assists and 23 digs.

CLASS 5A

Top-ranked Montgomery Academy (45-6) was 9-1 with regular season wins over Orange Beach and Elberta and beating Boaz, Albertville, West Point, Arab, Hoover, Bob Jones and Fairhope before losing to Spanish Fort in the Gulf Shores Shrimp Festival Tournament Gold Bracket championship.

Addi Vinson had 184 assists, 64 digs, 19 kills, 7 aces and 5 blocks, Elle McBride had 75 kills, 48 digs, 15 aces and 12 blocks and Caroline McDaniel had 65 kills, 43 digs, 20 aces and 12 blocks.

Second-ranked Arab (41-12) was 4-4 with Shrimp Festival Tournament wins over Shades Valley, West Point, Westminster Christian and Mobile Christian and losses to Thompson, Mobile Christian, Montgomery Academy and Madison County.

Laney Kelley had 78 kills, 6 aces, 7 blocks, 5 assists and 26 digs, Bennett Elrod had 34 kills, 7 aces, 3 assists and 51 digs, Millie Lackey had 22 kills, 6 aces, 120 assists and 41 digs and Lexi Mann had 26 kills, 2 aces, 8 blocks, 2 assists and 17 digs.

Eighth-ranked Madison Academy (33-17) beat East Limestone, Clements and Randolph.

Sydney Privett had 25 kills with a .442 attack percentage and Molly Byrne surpassed 2,000 career assists.

Providence Christian (19-17) was 1-2 with a win over Ashford and losses to St. James and Prattville Christian.

Ella Houston had 5 Aces, 74 Assists and 35 Digs and Ella Brown had 7 Aces, 36 Kills, 38 Digs and a 2.29 passer rating.

CLASS 4A

Fifth-ranked Madison County (43-12) was 9-1 with regular season wins over Priceville and Austin and beating Decatur, Lawrence County, Saraland, Daphne, St. Luke’s and Arab and losing to Enterprise in Gulf Shores’ Shrimp Festival Tournament to capture the Silver Bracket title.

Addy Gustafson had 12 aces and 186 assists, Ava Gustafson had 13 aces on 124 attempts, 50 kills and 40 blocks, Laylah Sanders had 19 aces on 142 attempts and 39 kills, Shelby Hill had 82 kills and Allie Yeary had 116 digs and 123 receptions.

Sixth-ranked Central-Florence (48-9) was 6-2 with win over Brooks to capture the county championship and a loss to Muscle Shoals in regular season play then downing Clements, Donaho and Springville in Supreme Courts Tournament pool play action and beating Curry, Oxford and falling to Spring Garden in the Gold Bracket championship.

Callie Beth Wright had 72 kills and 10 aces, Kinsley DiStefano had 60 kills (getting her 1,000th kill in the second set against Muscle Shoals on Tuesday) adding 11 aces and Chole May had 165 assists.

Brooks (27-21) was 7-2 with wins over Florence, Waterloo, Lexington, Elkmont, Covenant Christian and Cherokee and losses to Central-Florence and Muscle Shoals.

Maggie Jae Marsh had 42 Kills, 4 Blocks, 69 Assists, 16 Digs and 22 Aces, Scarlett Albert had 43 Kills, 7 Blocks and 12 Digs, Brayleigh Leone had 8 Assists, 5 Aces and 70 Digs and Raney Wood had 16 Assists, 14 Aces and 28 Digs.

Albert and Emma Campbell each surpassed 1,000 career digs.

New Hope (20-17) was 1-3 with a win over Randolph and losses to Guntersville, Geraldine and Cullman.

Malaina Cloud had 44 kills, 46 assist and 40 digs, Rylee Jo Harbin had 57 digs and Haley Garrisn had 24 kills.

Priceville (20-27) was 4-3 with wins over Austin, Lauderdale County, Belgreen and Altamont and lost to Madison County, Spring Garden and Oxford.

Ashlyn Johnson had 154 assists, 15 aces and 49 digs, Abby Langlois had 97 kills, 19 digs and 6 aces, Emmy Sherwood had 73 kills and 13 digs and Maddi Kennedy had 53 digs.

West Morgan (22-23) was 2-5 with regular season losses to Lawrence County and Buckhorn and beat Mary G. Montgomery and Demopolis and lost to Bob Jones, Gulf Shores and St. Luke’s in the Gulf Shores Shrimp Fest Tournament.

Victoria Parrish had 30 Kills, Brooklyn Hunt had 20 Kills and Kylei Russell had 62 Assists.

CLASS 3A

Top-ranked Plainview (43-5) won four matches to capture the county tournament, beating Douglas, Fyffe and Geraldine twice.

Ali Price had 89 assists, surpassing 5,000 career assists, good for No. 5 in AHSAA history, adding 26 digs. Kami Sanders had 31 kills and 24 digs, Chloe Hatch had 15 kills, 10 blocks and 23 digs and Faith Odom had 25 kills and 17 digs.

Second-ranked Mobile Christian (36-7) was 5-3 with a regular season win over Satsuma and loss to St. Paul’s and beating Shades Valley, Boaz, Arab and Auburn and losing to Hoover and Arab in Gulf Shores’ Shrimp Festival Tournament.

Melaina Haines had 95 Kills, 14 Aces, 82 Assists and 84 Digs, Haley Eldridge had 105 Assists, 37 Digs and 12 Aces, Hadley Kelly had 51 Kills and 9 Blocks, Ella Manning had 43 Kills, 5 Aces and 10 Blocks and Melissa Patel had 5 Aces and 100 Digs.

Third-ranked Lauderdale County (46-12) beat Wilson and lost to Priceville.

Molly Burchell had 25 kills, 7 digs and 5 aces. Brayden Chandler had 24 kills and 6 blocks, Adeline Dickerson had 28 digs and 4 assists, Emma Reding had 54 assists and 3 aces.

Abigail Reding surpassed 1,000 career digs.

Sixth-ranked Prattville Christian (28-18) was 5-4 with a regular season win over Providence Christian and losses to Saint James and Pike Road and beating Elberta, Baldwin County, Faith Academy and Mary G. Montgomery and losing to Daphne and Enterprise in Gulf Shores’ Shrimp Festival Tournament action.

Baylee Rogers had 163 assists, 38 digs, 8 aces and 11 kills, Emma Cate Carter had 43 kills, 69 digs, 10 aces, 3 blocks and 2 assists and Jenna McClendon had 43 kills, 20 blocks and 5 digs.

Ninth-ranked Houston Academy (18-13) was 3-1 with wins over Headland, Slocomb and Northside Methodist and a loss to Rehobeth.

Mary Suzan Aman had 38 Kills with a .508 attack percentage and 3 Blocks and Kaleigh Heard had 15 Aces (100 percent on 20 attempts) and 22 Digs.

No. 10 Geraldine (26-15) was 5-4 with wins over Donoho, New Hope, Crossville, Sylvania and Fyffe and losses to Fort Payne, Cullman and Plainview twice to finish runnerup in the DeKalb County Tournament.

Kentlei Rogers had 4 aces, 65 kills, 3 blocks and 13 digs, Hallie Burns had 5 aces, 2 kills, 7 assists and 91 digs, Brooklyn Hall had 16 aces, 99 kills, 12 blocks, 3 assists and 39 digs and Jaycee Berrong had 11 aces, 9 kills, 6 blocks, 184 assists and 36 digs.

Burns surpassed 1,000 career digs and Hall surpassed 1,500 career kills.

CLASS 2A

Third-ranked Donoho (25-21) was 1-5 with a win over Springville and losses to Geraldine, Fort Payne, Central Florence, Clements and Brewer.

Samantha Wakefield had 26 kills, 51 digs and 5 aces.

Sixth-ranked Sand Rock (42-16) was 7-1 with wins over Spring Garden, Westbrook Christian twice, Cedar Bluff, Jacksonville, Fairview and Glencoe and a loss to Cherokee County.

Rylin St.Clair had 210 assists and 15 aces, Katelyn St.Clair had 114 kills and 11 aces, Chloe Stephens had 129 digs and 10 aces, Bethany Davis had 58 kills, 79 digs and 11 aces and Zoey Handy had 34 kills and 13 blocks.

CLASS 1A

Top-ranked Addison (35-8) beat St. Bernard, Lynn and Meek in the Winston County Tournament.

Dacey Baker had 32 kills, 25 digs, 4 aces and 3 blocks, Bailee Ory had 29 digs and 8 aces and Hadley Butler had 12 kills, 32 digs, 14 aces, 2 blocks and 74 assists.

Baker surpassed 1,000 career kills while Ory went over 1,000 career digs and Butler surpassed 1,000 career digs and 1,000 career assists.

Sixth-ranked University Charter (27-4) beat Sipsey Valley twice and Choctaw County.

Ella Grace Larkin had 34 kills, 24 digs, 4 aces and 4 blocks, Maddy Gullahorn had 29 kills, 7 blocks, 5 digs and 6 aces, Brinkli Wood had 22 kills, 24 digs, 2 blocks and 6 aces and Emory Pezent had 51 assists, 23 digs, 9 kills and 7 aces.

Top-ranked Edgewood Academy (30-2) beat Macon East and lost to Glenwood.

Avery White had 14 kills, 4 aces, 5 digs and 23 assists, Lindsey Brown had 23 kills, 7 aces, 15 digs and 28 assists and Madison Martin had 14 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks.

Second-ranked Hooper Academy (19-3) beat Lowndes Academy.
