Parker scores in final minute to beat Mountain Brook
Parker quarterback Cameron Jennings delivered when it mattered the most.
Jennings – playing in place of injured starter Malik Muhammed – engineered a 16-play, 80-yard drive in the final minutes, including a pivotal play in which he picked up a teammate’s fumble and ran for a key first down, to lead the Thundering Herd to a 13-10 victory over Mountain Brook.
Na’eem Offord scored the game-winning 1-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds to go.
“Cam has always been ready to play,” Offord said, “and when it was his turn, he showed up and executed the plays.”
It’s Parker’s first victory over Mountain Brook in six tries.
Parker (7-1 overall, 5-0 in Class 6A, Region 5) appeared ready to take control late in the third quarter, but Jourdin Crawford fumbled at the Mountain Brook 1-yard line and the Spartans recovered.
Mountain Brook then drove 92 yards, before Parker defensive end Phillip Davison sacked Spartans quarterback John Cooper for an 11-yard loss. The Spartans settled for Harrison Fells’ 24-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead with 7:17 to play.
Parker then took over at its own 20 and methodically moved down the field. After a defensive penalty on Mountain Brook extended the drive, Offord fumbled at the Spartans’ 15 on a third-and-2 play. Jennings picked up the ball and hustled for the first down.
Offord scored the game-winner three plays later.
“After the fumble, I really wanted the ball, and I’m just glad Coach (Warren) trusted in me to give me the ball again and allow me to make the play to help us win this tough game,” Offord said.
Parker coach Frank Warren said he wanted to go for the win instead of trying to kick a field goal and force overtime.
“The decision to go for the TD instead of tying the game was simple. We came to win,” he said.

Coachspeak: “We didn’t play Mountain Brook football tonight. You don’t line up offsides and extend drives and they score. You don’t fumble the football. We played hard, but Parker s a good football team. We violated a lot of principles to winning a football game. We’re not going to win helping a team the way we did tonight.” – Mountain Brook coach Chris Yeager
“We have been disciplined all year and it finally showed up tonight. It was a hard-fought game, a playoff-type game. For us to beat them is a blessing.” – Warren
Injury bug: Muhammed suffered an injury earlier this season, which forced Jennings into the lineup. “Cameron Jennings came in the game and did everything he’s supposed to do to help use win this game,” Warren said.
What’s next?: Mountain Brook (5-2, 3-1) plays Mortimer Jordan at home next week, while Parker plays Minor at home.
