Friday roundup: Ramsay posts shutout, Hoover wins, Hartselle downs Athens

Ashton Ashford ran for three first-half touchdowns as the Rams downed John Carroll 28-0 to stay undefeated in Region 5 play.

Ashford ran 8 yards, 7 yards and 4 yards and Jayden Martin ran 49 yards with four seconds left in the third quarter to end the scoring.

Class 5A second-ranked Ramsay (6-2, 5-0) posted its first shutout of the season and secured a playoff spot with the Region 5 victory.

John Carroll (5-2, 3-2) plays at Jasper next week while Ramsay is at Hayden.

BIRMINGHAM

Hueytown 20, McAdory 15

Hueytown bolted to a 17-3 halftime lead then held off McAdory 20-15 in the Class 6A, Region 4 victory.

Hueytown (4-3, 4-1) drove 78 yards for the first score, Jakhael Rowser running 35 yards during the drive to set up his 6-yard run out of the Wildcat formation for a 7-0 lead with 4:54 left in the first quarter.

Hueytown’s Diego Torres booted a 27-yard field goal with 11:24 left in the half for a 10-0 lead.

McAdory cut the lead to 10-3 on Humberto Rosales’ 47-yard field goal with 2:51 left following an interception by Nick Thomason at the McAdory 5-yard line returned to the 25.

A personal foul penalty put the ensuing kickoff on the Hueytown 45 and Andre Matthews grabbed the squib kick on the 10-yard line, returning it to the McAdory 35.

Quarterback Jebron Ellington capped a five-play drive with a 7-yard run for a 17-3 halftime lead.

Torres kicked his second field goal of the night, this one from 27-yards for a 20-3 lead with 9:05 left in the third period.

McAdory scored when Derrion Davis caught a deflected pass for a 74-yard touchdown from quarterback Jacob Clopton, cutting the lead to 20-9 with 4:47 left in the game.

The Yellow Jackets ended the scoring on a 69-yard touchdown pass to JaCorey Whitted on the final play of the game.

Clay-Chalkville 72, Huffman 0

Class 6A, No. 2-ranked Clay-Chalkville scored 51 first-quarter points and led 65-0 at the half on the way to the Region 6 victory over winless Huffman.

The Cougars (7-0, 4-0) clinched a playoff spot with the win.

A win next week by Clay-Chalkville at ninth-ranked Oxford (6-1, 4-0), which was idle this week, secures the Region 6 championship.

Oxford has also clinched one of the four region playoff spots.

Thompson 67, Oak Mountain 7

Thompson scored the first 42 points to keep its Region 3 record perfect on the way to the easy win.

Class 7A second-ranked Thompson (6-1, 5-0) led 48-7 at the half and was never threatened.

AJ Green ran seven times for 173 yards and two scores and Michael Dujon ran nine times for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Three Thompson quarterbacks, Trent Seaborn, Zach Sims and Brooks Byars, threw four touchdown passes.

Thompson hosts Tuscaloosa County next week while Oak Mountain (1-7, 0-5) is at Vestavia Hills.

Homewood 34, Chilton County 13

Homewood won its fourth straight game, largely thanks to Will Myers.

Myers accounted for 325 yards of total offense – 102 rushing yards on 15 carries and 223 passing yards on 24-of-30 passing – to lead the Patriots to a 34-13 victory over Chilton County. He ran for four touchdowns.

Chilton County led 13-6 at halftime, but the Patriots (4-3 overall, 3-1 in Class 6A, Region 3) outscored the Tigers 28-0 in the second half.

Evan Ausmer also ran 17 times for 88 yards for Homewood, as the Patriots followed up 238 rushing yards and averaged 6.8 yards per carry. Chilton County tallied 367 yards of total offense, but lost a fumble and threw an interception.

Chilton County (3-5, 1-4) lost its second straight and is all but eliminated from playoff contention.

Homewood plays Pelham at home next week. Chilton County is idle next week before visiting Pelham on Oct. 27.

Center Point 32, Pinson Valley 19

The Eagles twice rallied from behind to earn the road win at Pinson Valley. Center Point trailed 7-0 to open the game, pulled out to a 16-13 lead and fell behind 19-16 in the third period before closing out the Class 6A, Region 6 win with a pair of touchdowns.

Quarterback Therman Deon Moore completed 15-of-20 passes for 288 yards and three TDs with one interception and ran for 126 yards on 16 carries and a score for Center Point (7-1, 4-1). Malik Brown caught six passes for 144 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Antonio Garfield caught four passes for 62 yards and a TD.

Moore also ran for a pair of 2-point conversions. Garfield had one 2-pointer and Jaquoryae Busby had one.

Pinson Valley dropped to 2-5 on the year and 1-3 in region play.

Center Point is off next week, while Pinson travels to Shades Valley.

Leeds 48, Alexandria 14

A blizzard of first-quarter big plays was all Class 5A ninth-ranked Leeds needed Friday night against Region 6 foe Alexandria.

Freshman Taylon Gaiter scored the first two times he touched the ball against the Valley Cubs and the Green Wave (5-2, 3-1) led 27-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Gaiter turned a bobbled pitch from quarterback Conner Nelson into a 64-yard touchdown on the third play from scrimmage.

After a quick three-and-out, the freshman hauled in a Valley Cubs punt at his 20-yard line and, in his words, “I had to make one guy miss and go.”

The Green Wave also got a 19-yard touchdown from tailback ZJ Dale and a 54-yard run by Nelson from the quarterback position. At halftime, the score was 41-0.

“I think we came out and executed at a high level tonight,” Leeds head coach Jerry Hood said.

The Valley Cubs (0-8, 0-5) got two passing touchdowns from quarterback Cole Wheeler to fellow freshman Jeffrey Beason in the fourth quarter. Wheeler threw for 120 yards on the night.

“Our young guys have got to see that this has got to cease,” said Alexandria head coach Todd Ginn. “You can’t keep playing like we did the first half tonight, and expect anything good to happen.”

Leeds now turns its attention to archrival Moody, which comes to Homer Smiles Field next week. Hood called his team “the biggest underdogs in high school football” against the Blue Devils, which defeated St. Clair County 60-0 Thursday night.

“It’s going to be an exciting game,” Leeds linebacker Miles Jones said. “Two good teams going head to head. It’s going to be a really good environment to play in.”

Hoover 37, Tuscaloosa County 10

The Bucs won their second straight Class 7A, Region 3 game with a big second half at Tuscaloosa County’s Wildcat Field in Northport. Hoover led 7-3 at the half, added 9 points in the third period and closed out the game with three four-quarter TDs.

After a scoreless opening period, Jamar Moultrie got the Bucs (3-5, 3-2) on the scoreboard with a 62-yard interception return to put the visitors up 7-3 after Jr Solis had booted a 27-yard field goal.

Jonah Winston scored on a 10-yard run for Hoover and the Bucs recorded a safety to take a 16-3 lead into the fourth.

After Chardarius Hutchins scored on a 30-yard run for the Wildcats (4-3, 2-3), Winston scored on a 36-yard run, Jordan Woolen caught a 48-yard scoring toss from Noah Schuback and Bradley Shaw ran 58 yards on his only carry to close out the scoring.

Hoover had 206 yards rushing and 114 through the air as Schuback completed 14-of-20 throws with a TD and one interception. Fred Dunson ran 18 times for 114 yards for the winners. Winston had four attempts for 51 yards. Woolen caught six passes for 68 yards.

Braeden Smith completed 12-of-20 passes for 105 yards for Tuscaloosa County. Hutchins ran 15 times for 112 yards.

Hoover plays at Chelsea next week while Tuscaloosa County travels to Thompson.

Vincent 41, Woodland 7

Casen Fields accounted for four touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets (6-2, 4-1) cruised to the Class 2A, Region 4 win.

Fields had 100 yards rushing on 14 carries with two touchdowns, completing 8-of-15 pass attempts for 87 yards and two scores.

Phoenix Maxwell finished with 64 yards receiving and two touchdowns, 41 yards and 8 yards.

Vincent ran for 317 yards as Jayden Roberts tallied 79 yards and Rykelus Robertson had 56 yards.

Landon Archer started the scoring with a 67-yard interception return and Field found Maxwell for 41 yards for a 14-0 lead.

Woodland scored its only touchdown, cutting the lead to 14-7 before the Yellow Jackets scored the next 27 points to close out the victory.

Fields scored on a 1-yard run for a 20-7 halftime lead then ran 36 yards for a score in the third period. Maxwell caught an 8-yard scoring pass and Quenterrius Robertson ended the scoring on an 83-yard scoring run.

Vincent plays at Isabella next week while Woodland is at Fayetteville.

Briarwood Christian 38, Calera 0

The Lions improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in Class 6A, Region 3 with the road win. Calera fell to 0-7, 0-5.

Briarwood rolled up 377 total yards while holding the Eagles to 53 – 34 on the ground.

Cooper Higgins ran for 70 yards on 17 attempts with a pair of touchdowns and caught two passes for 17 yards and another score in the win. Josh Thompson had six carries for 89 yards and a score and completed 12-of-14 passes for 175 yards and two TDs.

Sawyer Click caught four passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Briarwood will host Benjamin Russell next week while Calera is at Helena.

Woodlawn 38, Jackson Olin 36

Cornelius Hudson led Woodlawn to its first win of the season, completing 20-of-40 for 265 yards and four touchdowns, adding nine carries for 70 yards and another touchdown.

Deitric Young caught six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns and Kharon Lewis had five receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Woodlawn (1-5, 1-3) host Gardendale in Class 6A, Region 5 action next week while Jackson-Olin (0-7, 0-5) is idle.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Arab 63, Boaz 35

The Knights jumped to a 28-7 halftime lead with a ball-control offense and rolled to the Class 5A, Region 7 win. Arab held the ball for more than 17 minutes in the opening half.

Drew Puccio hit Luke Hudson with a 28-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring for the home team with 6:51 left in the first quarter. Aiden Wooten hit the first of his nine extra points on the night.

After a fumble recovery, the Knights (5-2, 3-1) used seven plays to cap a 67-yard drive with Logan Silva scoring on a 16-yard run. Arab’s third TD came on a drive that consumed almost nine minutes. Noah Mann threw a 13-yard double-reverse pass to Puccio for the score.

Tristan Childers got Boaz (2-5, 0-3) on the board on a 2-yard run with Jose Arreguin booting the PAT.

Puccio returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards to the Boaz 6 and Logan Alldredge scored on the next play as Arab led 28-7 at intermission.

Boaz outscored Arab 21-14 in the third quarter, only cutting the lead no closer than 14 points. The Pirates’ touchdowns came on a 1-yard run by Presley Fant, a 5-yard run by Childers and a 3-yard run by Tyler Pierce.

Arab scored on a 10-yard Puccio-to-Landon Strickland pass and an Alldredge 2-yard run in the third period. Silva scored on a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 49-28.

Boaz cut it to 49-35 on Childers third score of the night, a 4-yard run.

Puccio and Alldredge added touchdown runs to close out the scoring.

Arab travels to Guntersville while Boaz hosts Sardis Friday.

Hartselle 21, Athens 14

Hartselle never trailed Class 6A, Region 7 foe Athens but it took Ri Fletcher’s third touchdown run of the game to break a late tie en route to a 21-14 win on Friday.

Fletcher finished with 267 yards on the ground. The win put Hartselle (6-2, 3-1) in sole possession of second place in the region behind Muscle Shoals (7-0, 4-0).

Athens dropped to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the region. Brogan Gross had a touchdown pass to Caiden Dumas. John McIntyre rushed for a score. Gross added a 2-point conversion completion to Johnson Speegle.

“I could not be more proud of this bunch if we came out on top of the scoreboard,” Athens coach Cody Gross said. “I wouldn’t be more proud of them if we would have come out on top than where we are. We’ve got some guys banged up and hurt. They were hurting during the game. They’re hurting now but they didn’t bow down. They didn’t back down from any challenge. This will bode well for us going forward.”

Hartselle contained an Athens team that entered the game scoring 43 points per contest. Hartselle coach Bryan Moore said the defense limited the number of explosive plays by Golden Eagles.

“I thought that was the biggest thing,” Moore said. “We made them one-dimensional. For us to limit them, that’s something we didn’t do against Gadsden (City), something we didn’t do against Muscle Shoals, to limit that was really huge.”

The game was scoreless after the first quarter. Hartselle led 7-6 at halftime.

Athens tied the game at 14 apiece with a John McIntyre 1-yard run and the ensuing 2-point conversion with 6:27 left in regulation.

Fletcher scored the go-ahead touchdown with 3:28 remaining in the game.

Hartselle stopped Athens on downs (2:27) and ran out the clock.

Hartselle will play at Decatur on Friday in a region game. Athens will host region opponent Columbia.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Daphne 16, Fairhope 13

Al Woodard’s interception stopped a late Fairhope Drive, as Daphne reclaimed the Jubilee Cup for the first time in three years and earned its first victory over W.C. Majors Field since 2016.

Daphne’s Nick Clark and QB Jamar Malone scored rushing touchdowns, the Trojans scored a first-half safety was enough for a 16-13 Daphne victory over region rival Fairhope, to reclaim the Jubilee Cup for the first time in three years, and to win at Majors Field since 2016.

Daphne (4-3 overall, 3-1 in Class 7A, Region 1) trailed 3-0 after the first of Campbell McKellar’s two field goals, a 34-yarder, but responded with a Clark 2-yard touchdown run to make it 7-3.

After Nolan Phillips picked off Malone, Fairhope managed 4 yards in four plays before QB Jackson Robertson was sacked in the end zone by Marquaes Lambert for a safety to bump the Daphne lead to 9-3.

Daphne opened the third quarter with an 11-play, 64 yard drive, as Malone scored on a 1-yard run for a 16-3 lead.

Fairhope (1-6, 0-4) responded with a 13-play, 59-yard drive that ended with McKellar’s second field goal, a 26-yarer, to make to 16-6. The drive was set b Dixon Davis’ interception. On their next possession, the Pirates drove 65 yards in 10 plays, with Jackson Robertson scored from the 1 to make it 16-13.

Stat sheet: For Daphne, Jamar Malone finished 11-for-15 for 141 yards and two interceptions and six carries for 40 yards, Nick Clark had 22 carries for 156 yards, 1 rushing touchdown, and one catch for three yards. … Fairhope QB Jackson Robertson went 17-for-27, 153 yards and an interception, RB Preston Godfrey had 18 carries for 27 yards.

By the numbers: Daphne outgained Fairhope, 244-141 despite the Pirates running more plays, 53-50. The Trojans lost the penalty battle, 11 for 90, to Fairhope getting 6 for 37, as both teams had 16 first downs.

What’s next?: Daphne hosts Mary G. Montgomery next week, and Fairhope visits Alma Bryant.

Bayside Academy 35, Orange Beach 14

Bayside Academy quarterback Sammy Dunn enjoyed an almost-perfect night in Friday’s victory over Orange Beach.

Dunn completed 12-of-13 passes for 209 yards, with touchdown passes of 17 and 65 yards to Tait Moore and 36 yards to Miles Uter. Moore finished wiwth five catches for 125 yards.

Teague Broadhead added 103 yards and one touchdown rushing and added nine tackles on defense.

Bayside (5-2 overall, 3-1 in in Class 4A, Region 1) plays Escambia County at home next week. Orange Beach (0-7, 0-5) plays at Wilcox Central.

Davidson 21, Park Crossing 12

Terrance Gray scored a pair of rushing touchdowns as Davidson – playing without injured Coastal Carolina commit DJ Butler – wrapped up a non-region victory over Park Crossing.

The Warriors improved to 3-4 overall and will host Foley next week in 7A, Region 1 action. Park Crossing fell to 3-5.

Anthony Rabb had a receiving TD and an interception for Davidson. Micah Spivey threw a TD pass. Nick Perkins led the defense with three sacks and Aarin Hill had an interception.

Gulf Shores 55, Elberta 7

Class 5A No. 1 Gulf Shores improved to 8-0 with a road win at Elberta.

The Dolphins are now 6-0 in Region 1 play. They are idle next week before hosting Vigor (Oct. 27) and B.C. Rain (Nov. 3) to close the regular season.

Kolin Wilson ran for 120 yards and a TD on 12 carries, while N.C. State commit Ronnie Royal ran for 39 yards and 2 TDs on six carries.

Freshman QB Jud Harris was 12-of-18 for 213 yards and a TD, a 59-yarder to Braden Jackson.

The Gulf Shores defense held Elberta to 25 total yards. JaMichael Garrett had a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown and added 6 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Landon Everett had 4 tackles for a loss.

Jackson blocked a pair of Warrior punts. Royal had four punt returns for 154 yards, including a 38-yard TD.

Elberta (2-5, 1-4) hosts Vigor next week.

Jackson 49, Satsuma 6

Class 4A No. 4 Jackson stayed undefeated with a comfortable road win at Satsuma.

South Carolina commit Landon Duckworth was 11-of-14 for 228 yards and four touchdowns. He also had a 29-yard run.

EJ Crowell rushed for 113 yards and 3 TDs on just six carries and caught two passes for 46 yards and 2 TDs.

Red Chapman and Nasir Powell also had TD receptions.

The Aggies improved to 6-0 and 5-0 in Region 1 play. They will host St. Michael next week. Satsuma fell to 4-3, 2-3. The Gators travel to T.R. Miller next week.

St. Paul’s 54, Robertsdale 14

Cooper Estes had a 31-yard TD run and a 90-yard kick return for a score as St. Paul’s kept Robertsdale winless.

Estes also caught four passes for 100 yards.

Anthony Frazier rushed for 85 yards and 2 TDs on five carries. Noah Abrams had a 12-yard fumble recovery for a TD as the Saints scored in all three phases of the game.

St. Paul’s improved to 5-2 overall, 3-2 in 6A, Region 1 play and will travel to Blount on Friday. Robertsdale fell to 0-7, 0-6 and will travel to Spanish Fort next week. The Golden Bears relieved coach Kyle Stanford of his coaching duties this week.

Millry 67, J.F. Shields 0

The third-ranked Wildcats jumped to a 39-0 first-quarter lead and carrying a 60-0 advantage into intermission on the way to their seventh straight win.

Jaylen Manuel caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Daylon Edmunds, returned a punt 40 yards for a score and scored on a 40-yard interception return for Millry (7-1, 4-0 in Class 1A, Region 1).

The Wildcats also scored on a 2-yard run by Hisun Marlowe, a 23-yard pass from Edmunds to JB Tate, a 5-yard pass from Edmunds to Eli Adams, a 20-yard pass from Jackson Waite to Landon Doggette and a 2-yard pass from Caden Welford to Maurice Johnson Jr. Shooter Holyfield kicked a 38-yard field goal and made eight extra point kicks.

J.F. Shields dropped to 0-7 on the season and 0-4 in region play.

STATEWIDE

Pike Road 63, Russell County 27

Pike Road returned to interceptions for touchdowns and rolled up 521 yards of total offense a 63-27 road victory over Russell County at Corbett-Mitchell Stadium in Seale.

Pike Road (5-2 overall, 4-0 in Class 6A, Region 2) has now won five straight games.

Braylon Outlaw intercepted two passes, including one he returned 95 yards for a touchdown. Jordan Holmes also returned an interception 54 yards for a touchdown, and Trey Carver also intercepted a pass.

JaMichael Jones paced the offense with 15 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Adrian Thornton added 81 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries, and Patrick Carter added six carries for 90 yards and a touchdown. Quinton Robinson also scored a rushing TD.

Freshman quarterback Cason Myers completed 15-of-24 passes for 145 yards and a TD.

Pike Road play Stanhope Elmore at home next week, while Russell County (0-7, 0-5) plays at Park Crossing.

Montgomery Catholic 38, Bullock County 0

Josh Griffin ran 20 times for 183 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Montgomery Catholic (8-0 overall, 5-0 in Class 4A, Region 2).

The Knights have five recorded five straight shutouts and have allowed only 18 points this season.

Joe Pierce returned a punt for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown and added eight tackles and two pass break-ups. Myles Khatri had nine tackles, including four for a loss, and an interception. K.J. Washington, Harrison Rogers and Dylan Rogers recorded one sack apiece.

The Knights play Dale County at home next week, while Bullock County (3-5, 1-4) plays at Geneva.
