No. 1 Saraland routs Baldwin County to stay undefeated
Texas commit KJ Lacey had another productive night on offense, and No. 1 Saraland clicked in all three phases of the game as the Spartans routed Baldwin County 56-7 in Class 6A, Region 1 action at Spartan Stadium on Friday night.
Lacey completed 10-of-13 passes for 198 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while also rushing for a touchdown. Santae McWilliams rushed for 86 yards on 10 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 16, 1, and 10 yards. University of Alabama commit Ryan Williams caught five passes for 60 yards and a touchdown and rushed two times for 50 yards and a score.
CD Gill caught a touchdown pass, Tucker Singleton was 8-of-8 on extra points and Larry Edwards caught a touchdown pass from backup quarterback Gage Weaver as Saraland, which scored on eight of its first nine possessions, improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in region play.
Saraland racked up 334 yards of total offense in the first half alone and finished with 426 yards total offense for the game.
“I really didn’t think we played last week in some spots, especially defensively, but I felt tonight that our guys really played like they practiced all week; they had an edge, they had intensity,” said Spartans head coach Jeff Kelly. “To have the level of success they’ve had all year, they don’t practice that way. They practice kind of upset and they have that urge to get better, and it showed, I thought, in getting it done in all three phases tonight.”
Baldwin County (1-6, 1-4) lost its fourth straight game. The Tigers, who were without running back Ti Mims — who was ejected early in the game — mustered only 60 yards rushing and 31 yards passing, with most of the rushing yards coming late in the contest. Jamarion Marshall led Baldwin County with 54 yards rushing on 12 carries and a touchdown.
“The official told us that he (Mims) actually hit him when he and another boy was tied up,” said BCHS head coach Scott Rials. “He didn’t intentionally do it; it was just one of those things. Anyway, we lost it early because we do a lot of things around him. When you lose your top player early, it can make for a long night, and it was a long night.”
Saraland jumped out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead. McWilliams scored on a 16-yard run, Gill caught a 42-yard touchdown pass, and McWilliams scored his second touchdown of the night after a 28-yard punt return by Williams. Williams ended the first quarter scoring with a 36-yard touchdown run on a reverse.
The Spartans added three more touchdowns in the second quarter when Lacey scored on a 3-yard keeper, McWilliams scored on a 10-yard run, and Williams caught a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 49-0 with 15 seconds left in the half.
Saraland’s final score came with 3:27 left in the third quarter when Edwards caught a 17-yard touchdown pass. By that time, the game went to a running clock, and the Spartans were playing second and third stringers. Baldwin County avoided a shutout with 9:55 left in the game when Marshall scored on an 11-yard run.
Star of the game: Really, this was a team effort on Saraland’s part. All three phases of the game — offense, defense, and special teams — deserve complete billing.
Stats: For Saraland, Gill had three receptions for 80 yards, and Weaver completed all six of his passes for 61 yards and a score. For Baldwin County, Preston Kiper was 5-of-13 passing for 37 yards.
By the numbers: 5, number of first downs for Baldwin County; 8, number of penalties committed by Saraland; 18, first downs for Saraland; 18, total PATs kicked by Singleton in the last two games; 91, total offensive yards for Baldwin County.
Coachspeak: “Our defense had three-and-outs the first three drives, Ryan got some good runs and good returns, KJ had some beautiful passes early in the game, and when our guys get going, they get to flying around and smiling and they’re hard to stop. There’s a lot of guys out there that can hurt you. When they backed off the coverage, Santae had some good physical runs, so all in all, it was a good night at the office.” — Kelly.
“We got behind pretty quickly. We came out and battled some in the beginning, but we kind of lost our momentum. Those guys (Saraland) got a lot of good players; they play hard and they got a lot of skill guys. It was just one of those things where once we got behind the eight-ball, that thing just picked up steam and it kept rolling over us.” — Rials.
They said it: “We felt like we had some unknowns coming into the season with special teams, but Singleton might be leading the state in scoring with those extra points. He’s kicked a lot of extra points this year.” — Kelly.
“That’s the main goal, to get up (by a big margin) first. I think the best part is our defense holds up, and we have one of the best offenses in the state.” — Lacey.
Up next: Saraland is idle next week, while Baldwin County hosts Murphy.
