Mobile Christian shuts out rival Cottage Hill
Michael Moore and Jourdan Woullard each scored a pair of touchdowns Friday night and Class 3A, No. 2-ranked Mobile Christian’s defense pitched its fourth shoutout of the season with a 34-0 victory over rival Cottage Hill Christian at Kingdom Stadium.
With critical 3A, Region 1 games that carry major region playoff implications remaining at Flomaton next week and Thomasville the following week, Mobile Christian coach Ronnie Cottrell said it’s all about just one thing now for his undefeated Leopards (8-0 overall, 5-0 in 4A, Region 1).
“Consistency,” said Cottrell, amidst his team’s relatively muted, business-like celebration after the victory. “Cottage Hill came ready to go, but we’ve got to eliminate penalties. We had way too many penalties. We’ve just got to get a little more consistent with what we’re doing.
“We’re going to get better and better teams as we go. Flomaton is an unbelievable football team, and so is Thomasville.”
The Leopards were flagged six times for 72 penalty yards against Cottage Hill (0-7, 0-5), but the defense held Cottage Hill to just 101 yards of total offense.
“Shutouts to us means everybody put in the work, did everything good at practice, put in all the effort and work,” Leopards junior defensive tackle Floyd Boucard said. “We were on the scout team putting in work and watching film, and the score just proved it.”
Antonio Brown’s 36-yard run got the scoring started for Mobile Christian less than two minutes into the game, before Moore snagged a 21-yard TD pass from quarterback Damien Gaston Jr.. Woullard followed with a 68-yard bolt to the end zone on a direct snap for a 21-0 halftime lead.
Woullard’s 7-yard run late in the third period made it 28-0 after Carter Lewis’ fourth straight extra point, and Moore’s 41-yard punt return for a TD closed out the scoring.
Did you know?: Mobile Christian has shut out its last two opponents, Hillcrest-Evergreen and Cottage Hill, and won by a combined score of 76-0.
Top play: Woullard’s electric 68-yard dash to the end zone right before the half was a crusher for a Cottage Hill defense that had hung tough for the first two periods. They had the Leopards backed up at their own 6 and facing a second-and-25, but a big keeper by Gaston got it out to the 32. Woullard took a direct snap on the next play and didn’t stop running down the sideline in front of the Mobile Christian bench until he was in for the score.
By the numbers: 42, points allowed by the Leopards this season. … 111, yards gained by Brown on 10 carries. … 1, interceptions thrown by Warriors’ quarterback Shadrick Toodle Jr.
Looking ahead: The try for two after Moore’s score, an obvious dress rehearsal for a 2-point try later in the season, failed.
They said it …: “We come in with a (defensive) game plan every week and just execute the plan. Our scouting report is always right and our coaches prepare us well.” – Mobile Christian defensive back Jason Todd
“The scout team helps us prepare and we’re constantly watching film.” – Mobile Christian defensive lineman Trey Mathews
Coachspeak: “When you get like this, you’ve got to make sure that your leaders on the team step up. This is when it comes to a player-led team. It’s important to make sure they don’t keep their heads down.” – Cottage Hill coach Carvel Jones
What’s next?: Mobile Christian hits the road for the big region game at Flomaton, while Cottage Hill visits Monroe County.
