A homicide investigation is underway after a gunshot victim died at the hospital after they were hit by gunfire Thursday night in Birmingham’s Smithfield community, police said.

The victim was shot around 6:45 p.m. in the 300 block of Second Avenue North, police said.

The victim, whose name was not immediately publicly released, died of their injuries at a local hospital around 8 p.m.
