5 Coastal Alabama high school football games to watch in Week 8

The latest high school football game of the year on the Gulf Coast happens this week in Semmes.

Class 7A No. 4 Mary G. Montgomery hosts No. 10 Baker in a battle for Region 1 supremacy.

Zach Golson’s Vikings are 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the region and have won 13 straight regular season games. The Hornets are 6-1 – with their only loss coming to No. 7 Dothan – and also 4-0 in region play.

The matchup includes a pair of talented senior quarterbacks (Baker’s Josh Flowers, MGM’s Jared Hollins), multiple top receivers (Baker’s Bryce Cain and Kevin Beckham, MGM’s James Bolton) and a host of other top players.

The winner obviously has the inside track to the top seed from the region with just three weeks of regular-season play left after this one.

Here are five games to watch in Coastal Alabama this week:

BALDWIN COUNTY (1-5) AT SARALAND (7-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Spartan Stadium, Saraland

Last week: McGill-Toolen defeated Baldwin County 34-23; Saraland defeated Blount 59-20.

Region records: Saraland is 5-0 in 6A, Region 1; Baldwin County is 1-3.

The skinny: Saraland is 8-1 in nine games against Baldwin County and has won five in a row. The Tigers’ only win was a 15-14 victory in 2017. … With the exception of a blowout loss to Class 7A No. 4-ranked Mary G. Montgomery, Baldwin County has been in every game. The Tigers lost to Foley by 13, Spanish Fort by 1, Theodore by 3 in overtime and McGill-Toolen by 11 last week. In last week’s loss to the Yellow Jackets, Damorien Andrews scored two touchdowns in two minutes, including a 49-yard punt return TD. Ti Mims caught seven passes for 108 yards. … Saraland has won 31 of its last 33 games overall. The Spartans are averaging 53.7 points a game and have scored 66, 70 and 59 in their last three contests. Junior QB KJ Lacey is completing 70 percent of his passes for 1,423 yards and 22 TDs. He’s been intercepted just twice. Junior Santae McWilliams and sophomore Deshawn Spencer have combined for 790 yards rushing and 10 TDs. Reigning Mr. Football Ryan Williams has 10 TD receptions and 3 rushing TDs. Alabama commit Antonio Coleman has 33 tackles, 12 TFL and 5 sacks.

BAKER (6-1) AT MARY G. MONTGOMERY (7-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Grider Field, Semmes

Last week: Baker defeated Alma Bryant 35-6; Mary G. Montgomery defeated Davidson 48-13.

Region records: Both teams are 4-0 in Class 7A, Region 1.

The skinny: MGM leads the overall series 31-26-2. The Vikings snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Hornets with last year’s 37-20 victory. … Baker’s only loss of the season came two weeks ago at home against Dothan (35-14). Mississippi State QB commit Josh Flowers is completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 1,464 yards and 14 TDs. He’s also rushed for 775 yards and 10 TDs. Rod Taylor has rushed for 744 yards and 7 TDs. Auburn commit Bryce Cain has caught 29 passes for 729 yards and 12 TDs. Kevin Beckham Jr. has caught 37 passes for 536 yards and 2 TDs. … MGM has won 13 straight regular season games dating back to last season. The Vikings are averaging 35 points a game on offense, while the defense has allowed just 8.5 points a game. No opposing offense has scored more than 14 points against MGM. South Alabama QB commit Jared Hollins is completing 69 percent of his passes for 1,602 yards and 17 TDs with 2 interceptions. He’s also rushed for 269 yards and 5 TDs. James Bolton is the leading receiver with 29 receptions for 487 yards and 7 TDs. Kaden Harrell has 3 TD receptions. Three others all have 2 receiving TDs. John Robinson leads the defense with 58 tackles.

B.C. RAIN (4-2) AT UMS-WRIGHT (4-2)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Cooper Stadium, Mobile

Last week: B.C. Rain defeated Citronelle 47-14; UMS-Wright defeated Elberta 55-13.

Region records: UMS-Wright is 3-1 in Class 5A, Region 1. The Bulldogs received a forfeit win from Vigor. B.C. Rain is 2-2.

The skinny: UMS leads the all-time series 15-3 and has won nine straight. The Red Raiders’ last win over UMS was a 21-2 victory in 1972. … B.C. Rain has won three straight games since starting the season 1-2. The Red Raiders have scored 49 and 47 points in each of their last two games. Last week, Bryce Dowdlan rushed for 205 yards and 4 TDs on just 10 carries. He scored on runs of 28, 1, 74 and 59 yards. Rain finished with 508 total yards, though they also committed 21 penalties for 165 yards. Amari Yelding was 8-of-11 passing for 131 yards. … UMS scored more points last week (55) than it had in its previous five games this season combined (45). Troy commit Joe Lott ran for a TD, threw a TD pass and returned an interception 71 yards for a score last week for the Bulldogs. Jake Jaye rushed for 109 yards and 2 TDs on 11 carries. Perry Hand also had an interception return for a score. … UMS coach Terry Curtis is the AHSAA’s all-time leader in wins with 352.

Daphne vs. Spanish Fort

DAPHNE (3-3) AT FAIRHOPE (1-5)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Fairhope Municipal Stadium, Fairhope

Last week: Daphne was idle; Fairhope lost at Foley 21-17.

Region records: Daphne is 2-1 in Class 7A, Region 1; Fairhope is 0-3.

The skinny: Daphne leads the overall series 24-10, but Fairhope has won five of the last six games. The Pirates won 26-7 a year ago. … Daphne lost two straight games before its off week. The Trojans followed a 33-20 loss to Baker with a 35-27 home loss to rival Spanish Fort. In that game, Daphne led 27-7. In that game, transfer QB Jamar Malone was 16-of-24 for 169 yards and a pair of touchdowns. CJ Gardner and Hayden McLaurin both had TD receptions. Kenny King is 49-33 in his 8th year as head coach of his alma mater. … Fairhope has lost five straight games for the first time since opening the season 0-5 in 2016. The Pirates have yet to score more than 17 points in a single game this season. In last week’s loss at Foley, Preston Godfrey rushed for 136 yards and 2 TDs on 31 carries. He also had four receptions for 20 yards. Godfrey has rushed for 5 TDs this season. Dallas Boothe leads the Fairhope defense with 55 tackles.

SPANISH FORT (5-2) AT MCGILL-TOOLEN (4-2)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Thursday, Archbishop Lipscomb Stadium, Mobile

Last week: Spanish Fort defeated St. Paul’s 35-6; McGill-Toolen defeated Baldwin County 34-23.

Region records: Spanish Fort is 4-1 in Class 6A, Region 1; McGill-Toolen is 3-1.

The skinny: McGill-Toolen has a 6-3 record against Spanish Fort, but the Toros have won the last three. … Both teams have been hot lately. Spanish Fort has won three straight since losing to top-ranked Saraland. McGill has won four straight since opening 0-2. … Last week on the Hill, Alabama LB commit Sterling Dixon made a surprise return from injury in the team’s win over St. Paul’s. Sophomore QB Aaden Shamburger completed 13-of-18 passes for 173 yards with two touchdowns and one interception on a deflected ball. He also rushed eight times for 33 yards. Sawyer Wilson scored on a 13-yard run and a 24-yard screen pass. Dixon leads the team in tackles with 77 and also has 16 TFL and 9 sacks. Louisville commit Cole McConathy has 60 tackles, 21 TFL and 14 sacks. … After scoring just 6 points in their first two games combined, the Yellow Jackets have averaged 42.5 in the last four. In last week’s win, freshman Ladarien Miller ran for 205 yards and three TDs. QB Andrew Murchison completed 14-of-24 passes for 157 yards. Jacobi Whitfield had a pair of interceptions for McGill.
