5 takeaways: South Alabama 55, Louisiana-Monroe 7

South Alabama got back on track in a major way on Saturday night in Monroe, La.

The Jaguars thumped Louisiana-Monroe 55-7 at Malone Stadium, scoring on nine of 10 possessions and piling up nearly 600 yards of total offense. South Alabama (3-3, 1-1 Sun Belt Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak this season, and won for the first time at ULM.

After six straight Saturday games, the Jaguars have their first open date of the season next week. Before that, here are five takeaways from South Alabama’s dismantlement of the Warhawks:

1. South Alabama played arguably its most dominant game ever

It’s hard to overstate just how much the Jaguars controlled the action on Saturday. The 55 points were the most they’d ever scored against a Division I opponent, while the margin-of-victory was nearly double the program’s largest ever on the road. South Alabama scored on all five of its first-half possessions, leading 17-0 before ULM even got a first down and 31-0 before the Warhawks scored for the first time. Rarely in the program’s 14 years have they so completely throttled an opponent.

2. The curse of Monroe was dismissed with extreme prejudice

South Alabama was 0-4 all-time prior to Saturday at Malone Stadium, where weird things have tended to happen to the Jaguars in the past. But they didn’t allow any opportunities for north Louisiana voodoo this time around. ULM’s Tyrone Howell did catch a touchdown pass between three defenders, but the Warhawks were down 31-0 at the time. It would have taken 10 or 12 bad bounces for South Alabama to lose this one, and no one is that unlucky.

3. Bradley-to-Lacy connection continued to flourish

After completing 20 of 29 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns, Bradley is now South Alabama’s all-time leader in completions, yards and touchdowns, and is closing in on the mark for attempts. Lacy thrived once again Saturday despite being the Jaguars’ only proven outside receiver, posting his fifth straight 100-yard game. His 44-yard touchdown on Saturday was just a matter of beating single coverage, though he made a nice leaping grab in the end zone. He’s on pace to shatter the program’s single-season records for yards and touchdowns.

4. South Alabama defense controlled the passing game

After getting roasted by the likes of Tulane and James Madison this year, the Jaguars made a point of not letting the ULM receivers get behind them on Saturday. A year after going off for nine catches, 244 yards and three touchdowns vs. the Jaguars, Howell caught just four passes for 41 yards and the one score. South Alabama came up with a pair of interceptions, with a third one wiped out by a targeting call. ULM quarterback Jiya Wright didn’t make many plays with his legs, either.

5. The Jaguars’ schedule is about to get weird

The first half of South Alabama’s schedule was as conventional as it could be, with six straight Saturday games. As they head into the second half, however, the Jaguars will play just one Saturday game over the next four weeks. An open date is followed by a Tuesday night game vs. Southern Miss on Oct. 17, then another dormant Saturday leads into the Oct. 28 game with Arkansas State. Then comes a short week before the Thursday, Nov. 2 game at Troy. The Jaguars will play three straight Saturdays to close out the regular season starting Nov. 11, but only play three games in the 35 days leading up to the home stretch.

Next up: South Alabama has an open date next week, leading into a Tuesday night home game vs. Southern Miss on Oct. 17. That game will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and will be televised live by ESPNU.
