Federal fugitive holed up in Tuscaloosa hotel room now in custody

A standoff at a Tuscaloosa hotel ended with a federal fugitive in custody.

The U.S. Marshals Service and the Tuscaloosa Police Department’s SWAT team set up outside the Ramada Inn on Skyland Boulevard. The standoff began shortly after 9 a.m.

Northern District of Alabama U.S. Marshal Marty Keely said 43-year-old Uvaldo Garcia was holed up in a hotel room.

He is wanted on a federal warrant for violation of supervised released on a previous conviction. The original crime could not immediately be confirmed.

After several hours of unsuccessful negotiations, authorities deployed tear gas into the room. Garcia was taken into custody without further incident.
