Evan Neal apologizes to Giants’ hamburger-flipping fans

New York offensive tackle Evan Neal told the fans at MetLife Stadium to “boo louder” during the Giants’ 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.

After the former Alabama All-American’s comments on Wednesday, they’re likely to accommodate him, even though Neal apologized on Wednesday night.

“I am wrong for lashing out at the fans who are just as passionate and frustrated as I am,” Neal tweeted. “I let my frustrations in my play and desire to win get the best of me. I had no right to make light of anyone’s job, and I deeply regret the things I said.

“We are working day in and day out to grow as a team, and this was an unnecessary distraction. I apologize.”

What did Neal say to prompt the apology?

The tackle ripped into “fair-weather” fans.

“A lot of fans are bandwagoners,” Neal told Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media. “I mean, I get it. They want to see us perform well. And I respect all of that. But no one wants us to perform well more than we do.

“And how can you say you’re really a fan when we’re out there battling our asses off and the game wasn’t going well, but the best you can do is boo your home team? So how much of a fan are you, really? …

“Most critics really don’t understand the game of football to the level that we understand it in this building. So why would a lion concern himself with the opinion of a sheep? I’m just going to focus on Evan and getting better. I honestly do not care what anybody has to say about Evan Neal because they’re going to talk anyway.”

What Neal said next really appeared to strike a nerve with the Giants’ fans.

“I genuinely don’t care,” Neal said of the fans’ opinions. “Why should I? I’m in the National Football League. The person that’s commenting on my performance, what does he do? Flip hot dogs and hamburgers somewhere?”

New York’s loss to Seattle dropped the Giants to 1-3. New York defeated the Arizona Cardinals 31-28 on Sept. 17. But in their other three games, the Giants have been outscored 94-15.

The Seahawks sacked New York quarterback Daniel Jones 11 times on Monday night as the Giants played their third straight game without left tackle Andrew Thomas. A hamstring injury has sidelined Thomas.

“We take responsibility for those 11 sacks,” Neal said in the locker room after the game. “We just have to play better. There’s no excuse for it. We come in to work every day, we work hard, we put our best foot forward and, right now, we’re just not playing our best ball.

“I’m confident in this group, and I’m confident we’re going to turn it around. But right now, we got to get to the drawing board and figure it out.”

Neal is in his second season as the Giants’ right tackle. He joined New York as the seventh selection in the 2022 NFL Draft after earning consensus All-American recognition as Alabama’s left tackle in 2021.

The Giants visit the Miami Dolphins at noon CDT Sunday.
