Los Angeles Chargers outside linebacker Khalil Mack and Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua turned in two of the outstanding performances during Week 4 of the NFL’s 2023 season.

In the Chargers’ 24-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Mack sacked quarterback Aidan O’Connell six times. Mack joined former Alabama standout Derrick Thomas as the only NFL players with at least five sacks in two games (since sacks became an official statistic in 1982).

In the Rams’ 29-23 overtime victory against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Nacua had nine receptions for 163 yards and one touchdown. Nacua joined former North Alabama standout Harlon Hill as the only players with three 100-yard receiving performances in the first four games of his NFL career.

Mack had five sacks in the Oakland Raiders’ 15-12 victory over the Denver Broncos on Dec. 13, 2015.

Thomas had an NFL-record seven sacks in the Kansas City Chiefs’ 17-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 11, 1990, and six sacks in the Chiefs’ 28-8 victory over the Raiders on Sept. 6, 1998.

Nacua opened his NFL career with 10 receptions for 119 yards in the Rams’ 30-13 victory over the Seahawks on Sept. 10 and 15 receptions for 147 yards in a 30-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 17. Between the 49ers and Colts, Nacua had five receptions for 72 yards in a 19-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 25.

Chosen by the Rams from BYU, Nacua was the 177th player picked in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Chicago Bears took Hill with the 174th choice in the 1954 NFL Draft.

Hill kicked off his career with four receptions for 140 yards and one touchdown in a 48-23 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sept. 26, 1954, in his debut, three receptions for 144 yards and one touchdown in a 28-9 victory over the Baltimore Colts on Oct. 10, 1954, in Game 3 and four receptions for 116 yards and one touchdown in a 31-24 loss to the 49ers on Oct. 17, 1954, in Game 4.

Hill was a prep star at Lauderdale County before playing at Florence State Teachers College (now North Alabama). In his rookie season, Hill went on to record the first 1,000-yard receiving season in Chicago history – a feat that included 214 receiving yards in a 31-27 victory over the 49ers on Oct. 31, 1954, that stood as the franchise single-game record for 59 years.

Hill died in 2013, but his name lives on in football in the Harlon Hill Trophy, which has been presented annually since 1986 to the best player in NCAA Division II.

In the season with his seven-sack game, Thomas led the NFL with 20 sacks in 1990. He recorded 126.5 sacks, which ranks 17th in NFL history. When he finished his career, Thomas stood ninth on the career sacks list.

Thomas died on Feb. 8, 2000, after being injured in a traffic accident. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
