Alabama menâs basketball set for charity exhibition against Wake Forest
With the 2023-24 season approaching, Alabama men’s basketball has scheduled a warmup game for a good cause.
On Oct. 29, the Crimson Tide will travel to Wake Forest for a charity exhibition. All proceeds will be donated in support of stroke research.
“We are excited and honored to partner with Wake Forest for this meaningful event,” Alabama head coach Nate Oats expressed in a statement released Tuesday. “To be able to play an exhibition game and help people in need is a great opportunity that goes beyond basketball. At the same time, it will also give us an opportunity to test ourselves against a quality program in a road environment at Wake Forest.”
The matchup will be at 1 p.m. at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Admission will be free, but there is a “suggested voluntary donation” of $20. The funds will help fund research at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Stroke Center.
The event will be significant for the Demon Deacons program, specifically head coach Steve Forbes. His wife, Johnetta, suffered a stroke this summer. In a release from Wake Forest, Forbes noted the support he’s received from the community and what it’ll mean for him to help give back.
“I am so grateful to my children, family, friends and the entire Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community for their outpouring of support since her medical event. Additionally, I want to thank my players and staff for their understanding and support as I have been back-and-forth in Atlanta for the past six weeks before we were able to bring Johnetta home just over a week ago. We are excited for our community to see our players perform and to drive awareness and help support stroke research for this incredible organization and partner,” said Forbes.
There is no information yet on a possible broadcast for the exhibition. Wake Forest noted more “will be shared in the coming weeks.” A donation link is also open to support the event and stroke research.
Alabama will start its season on Nov. 6 against Morehead State with a reloaded roster. The Tide has a 2-5 record all-time against Wake Forest, last meeting in the 1999 National Invitation Tournament.
