Alabama NFL roundup: Derrick Henry passes Earl Campbell

Alabama NFL roundup: Derrick Henry passes Earl Campbell

Tennessee running back Derrick Henry passed Pro Football Hall of Famer Earl Campbell on the franchise rushing list on Sunday as the Tennessee Titans defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 27-3.

Henry ran for 122 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries, caught an 11-yard pass and threw a TD pass as the Titans rebounded from a 27-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns last week to trounce the Bengals by the same score.

Henry’s first 100-yard game of the 2023 season was the 35th of his career. (He also has three 100-yard rushing games in the playoffs.)

The output allowed Henry to move past Campbell into second place on the franchise list for career rushing yards. Henry has 8,620 yards and 80 touchdowns on 1,823 carries since joining Tennessee in 2016. While playing for the Houston Oilers from 1978 through 1984, Campbell ran for 8,574 yards and 73 touchdowns on 1,979 carries.

The franchise leader for rushing yards is Eddie George with 10,009 from 1996 through 2003.

Henry ranks 39th in NFL history in career rushing yards after passing Jim Taylor and Terry Allen on the all-time list on Sunday (but not Campbell, who ranks 37th with 9,407 rushing yards thanks to his output during two seasons with the New Orleans Saints).

Henry scored on a 29-yard run that made him the 21st player in NFL history with 8,500 rushing yards and 80 TD runs as Tennessee took a 17-3 lead with 3:58 left in the first half.

Henry tossed a 2-yard touchdown pass as a wildcat quarterback with 10 seconds remaining in the first half. Henry has passed for three touchdowns during his NFL career.
