Troy dominates second half in 28-7 win at Georgia State
Troy knocked Georgia State from the ranks of the unbeaten on Saturday night, forcing three turnovers and scoring a 28-7 victory at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta.
The Trojans (3-2, 1-1 Sun Belt Conference) outscored the Panthers 22-0 in the second half on their home field. Troy also intercepted Georgia State quarterback Darren Grainger twice, and came up with another huge takeaway near the goal line in the fourth quarter.
On second and goal from the Troy 1 with 8:21 left and the Trojans up 21-7, Zach Edwards hit Grainger in the middle of an option pitch. Linebacker Jayden McDonald — a Suwanee, Ga., native — scooped up the ball and returned it out to the 32, and Troy as never seriously threatened again.
Here’s video of the play:
Troy forced two turnovers in the red zone, including O’Shai Fletcher’s interception at the Trojans’ 3 on the first series of the game. Troy held Georgia State — which came in averaging 37 points per game — to 298 total yards and just one touchdown.
Georgia State (4-1, 1-1) led 7-6 at halftime, with Troy’s only points coming on a pair of Scott Taylor Renfroe field goals. However, the Trojans drove 75 yards with the second-half kickoff to take the lead for good at 13-7 on Damien Taylor’s 45-yard run with 11:56 left in the third.
Caleb Ransaw picked off Grainger on the next series, but Renfroe missed a 42-yard field goal to keep it a 6-point game. After the Trojans forced a punt, they got into the end zone again when Gunnar Watson threw 14 yards to running back Kimani Vidal for a touchdown.
Watson then threw to Deyunkrea Lewis for two points to make it 21-7 with 2:42 left in the third. That score stood until there were six seconds remaining, when Vidal burst across the goal line from six yards away to put the game on ice.
Vidal, an Atlanta-area native, rushed for 76 yards on 23 carries. Watson passed for 256 yards, 121 of that on seven completions to Jabre Barber.
Grainger went 19-for-29 for 193 yards and two interceptions, but did not throw a touchdown pass for first time all year. The Panthers’ lone score came on a 1-yard run by Marcus Carroll midway through the second quarter, which made the score 7-6 at halftime.
