Birmingham police investigating cityâs 2nd killing of the day
A man was found shot to death inside a vehicle in a south Birmingham apartment complex parking lot Saturday afternoon in the city’s second killing in just over an hour.
Officers were dispatched at 4:12 p.m. to the 1000 block of Penthouse Drive. That address is Mountainside Apartments.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said an adult male was unresponsive inside a vehicle. Authorities determined he had been shot.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.
Fitzgerald said investigators have few details surrounding the shooting but are hoping witnesses will come forward.
“We know this took place inside a heavily populated apartment complex,’’ he said.
The killing was Birmingham’s second on Saturday.
Shortly after 3 p.m., a man was fatally shot while driving through Five Points West. He hit several cars, crashed through a construction fence, and came to a stop in front of an abandoned apartment complex.
He, too, was pronounced dead on the scene.
In a third shooting, a man was shot and injured in Birmingham’s Titusville community. Few details were available.
Saturday’s homicides bring the city’s total to 98 this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been ruled justifiable.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 139 homicides, including the 98 in Birmingham.
