Live updates: Nick Saban previews LSU game
After Alabama holds its Wednesday afternoon practice, Nick Saban spoke to reporters ahead of Saturday’s game against LSU, which opened as No. 10 in Tuesday’s College Football Playoff rankings.
Here were the live updates as Saban held his news conference:
— Saban opens by talking about maintaining intensity, whether it is practice or a game. Saban says players need to “pound their chest” to regain mental focus when they lose intensity. Saban said every player needs to make the choice. “Nobody chooses to win, nobody really chooses to lose,” Saban said.
— Asked about being too tight before a game, Saban said he has not detected that from players. Saban said attaching yourself to winning is attaching yourself to an outcome, which creates anxiety. Saban wants players to attach players to preparation.
— Saban says he does not feel it is fair to assess the offense because it’s been “a little left-handed” since Bryce Young was injured in the Arkansas game, and has not been able to practice much until recently. The continuity and timing has been “distorted,” Saban said, but the “good news” is the backup quarterbacks have gotten reps and that has helped them. Saban said Bryce Young is the most important player on the team and “we’ve been a little bit out of sorts.” Saban said he “really challenged” players to be able to do things better, whether it’s running the ball, running routes, making more explosive plays — but reiterates it is “unfair to judge anything that’s happened in the last couple of weeks.”
— Saban said LSU is very efficient and effective in executing their offense, and have young players that have improved at tackle and tight end. “This is a really, really good team, all the way around,” Saban said. “They’re starting to get confidence and believe in exactly what they’re supposed to do.”
— Saban said the response from players has been “very good” coming out of the bye week. “We’ll see how we play,” he said as a disclaimer.
— Saban said JC Latham has “done a good job for us” at right tackle. He said any player would say they are looking to have better consistency in performance. “That’s true for JC,” he said. “But we’re really pleased with the way he’s developed and played for us this year.”
— Saban said Ja’Corey Brooks is a “great competitor” who plays willingly on special teams, plays fast and plays hard. “He’s attaching himself to the right things, and I think that’s sort of showing in his production and his performance and the consistency that he’s played with.”
