16-year-old charged with capital murder in slaying of 57-year-old man in Forestdale
A 16-year-old has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a 57-year-old man in Forestdale.
The teen suspect’s name is being because of his age. He is charged in the Sept. 19 killing of Demetrius Knight.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 5:40 p.m. that Tuesday to the 1700 block of Huitt Street on a report of a shooting.
A resident called 911 to report someone had wrecked in the front yard, said Lt. Joni Money. The homeowner went out to check on the driver and found that he’d been shot.
Knight was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:06 p.m.
Authorities said Knight was driving his vehicle when another vehicle reportedly pulled beside him and opened fire.
Sheriff’s detectives scoured the area looking for witnesses and evidence. They identified the 16-year-old as a suspect and presented their evidence to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, which issued the capital murder warrant on Tuesday.
A motive has not yet been disclosed.
The teen is being held in the G. Ross Bell Juvenile Detention Center awaiting an adjudication hearing. He is being held without bond under Aniah’s Law.
Family members of Knight are planning to a hold a vigil in his memory.
