Madison County school bus driver arrested for DUI after crash
A Madison County school bus driver has been charged with driving under the influence after a Monday afternoon crash.
In a statement from Madison County Schools Superintendent Ken Kubik, the system said the driver, whose name was not released, failed at least one part of a field sobriety test following the incident.
“I assure you that this behavior has no place in our school district, and we remain steadfast in our mission to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff,” Kubik said.
According to WAAY, Kubik said the bus driver was transporting 10 students from Sparkman Middle School.
Originally, officials thought the driver experienced a medical emergency along Dan Crutcher Road. The bus collided with a vehicle and left the roadway. There were no student injuries reported at the scene.
Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) began an investigation as parents picked up their children.
Troopers delivered the field sobriety test after they believed there was probable cause to check the bus driver for impairment, Kubik said. The driver was then transported to an area hospital for further medical tests.
Kubik said the system’s transportation department had earlier been contacted by a “concerned resident” who reported the same bus traveling “in an unusual manner” around Madison Cross Roads Elementary. An employee met with the driver along the route at the middle school, but did not observe anything unusual with the driver’s demeanor, Kubik said.
“The driver in question is experienced and has been with MCSS for a year without incident,” he said. “The driver said they had not been feeling well over the weekend. After watching and talking to the driver for a few minutes, the employee allowed the driver to continue the route. To be clear, MCSS would never knowingly allow an impaired driver to operate a school bus.”
