Will Alabama QB Dylan Lonergan also play baseball? âTime will tellâ
It’s not often that Alabama football has a two-sport athlete. Quarterback Dylan Lonergan has the potential to be the next one if everything falls correctly.
Lonergan, a true freshman who was listed on the roster for Saturday’s game against Ole Miss, was a four-star prospect in both football and baseball coming out of high school. According to Crimson Tide baseball coach Rob Vaughn, UA will wait and see with Lonergan’s future in that sport.
“Football comes first for him,” Vaughn said Monday. “I think a lot of that, the plan is for him to come over in January. That’s been the conversation is him to come over in January and start working with us and doing some things with us. I think time will tell on that, right?”
Nick Saban praised Lonergan’s football prowess as Alabama’s camp wound down, but the true freshman hasn’t seen the field in a game yet. Jalen Milroe has seemed to cement himself as the starter recently, with Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson also ahead of Lonergan on the depth chart.
While the plan is for Lonergan to join the baseball team in January, Vaughn made sure to note that’s subject to change.
“That guy starts getting too many snaps this fall, things can change,” Vaughn said. “Everything can change. We’ve tried to really, we don’t want to be a distraction to Dylan right now. He’s got a job to do, he’s here for a reason and we’ve had good conversations this summer to have a plan in place when the time is right.”
Lonergan came to Alabama from Brookwood High School in Georgia. He was the No. 13 quarterback in the class of 2023 according to the 247Sports composite ratings.
He chose Alabama over South Carolina ,Stanford, Arizona State and Arkansas among others.
Alabama baseball opened fall practice on Monday. However, the day’s work was cut short due to torrential rain that moved through the Tuscaloosa area.
