Live updates: Hugh Freeze addresses ugly Texas A&M loss, previews No. 1 Georgia

Auburn is at a crossroads.

It’s coming off its worst performance of the season with an offense that showed some serious quarterback questions in a 27-10 loss to Texas A&M.

So what to do now? Facing No. 1 Georgia this week doesn’t feel like the right time to figure things out.

Head coach Hugh Freeze will discuss the Texas A&M loss and preview the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry in his Monday press conference, beginning at 11 a.m.

Follow along below for updates:

– Freeze begins by stating there was a lot he liked from the defense. He thinks that the defense actually could have held Texas A&M to 13 points but injuries especially to Zion Puckett and Donovan Kaufman didn’t help.

– Freeze said “you’ll find this hard to believe” but he actually saw some things he liked from the offense in the first half after he watched film. The penalties just hurt a ton.

– Freeze re-iterated the same point he made Saturday: the receivers were open, the throws just weren’t made.

– “Thank god we’re playing in Jordan-Hare,” Freeze said of playing Georgia this week

– “We’re still kind of wading through that,” Freeze said on if Payton Thorne will still be the sure-thing QB1.

– Freeze takes blame on himself and the whole offense for the quarterback struggles. He said he feels like he and the whole offense have let the quarterbacks down. That includes coaching, routes run poorly by wide receivers, poor protections, the whole thing. He said he thinks the QBs have taken too much blame for a problem that isn’t solely on them.

– “Damari will be out for a period of time, for sure,” Freeze said of Damari Alston. He had a dislocated shoulder but is undergoing more tests today. Zion Puckett left with a shoulder injury. Kaufman is dealing with an ankle injury. Calls those injuries to Puckett and Kaufman day-to-day injuries.

– Freeze continues on players running wide open. He thinks the game plan was open, it just wasn’t always executed well. He isn’t sure if that is an execution issue or a coaching issue.

– Freeze said Thorne has been sharp in practice and he was before Texas A&M. But that didn’t translate to the game. Freeze said he and offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery need to figure out how to make that happen in the game.

– “This is not my first rodeo with taking over a program that has struggled,” Freeze said.

– Freeze talking about the patience and the time it takes to build a program. That comes from installing a system and, of course, recruiting. This will be a big recruiting weekend for Auburn with a significant number of high-level high school players and top Auburn targets expected to be at Jordan-Hare Stadium this weekend.

“He’s built a dang good football program over there,” Freeze said of Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. Said it’s impressive how quickly he’s built a successful program.

– So Freeze is asking fans for some patience. He knows he can’t control people’s patience so he won’t worry about it. He said he knows wins will come, but it’s going to take time. Building a program doesn’t happen quickly. “I think it’s kinda ridiculous that those are already discussions in and around our kids,” Freeze said of fans expecting quick results. But said fans should expect kids to play hard and believes they have played hard.

– Freeze continues to say he’s struggling with passing off play-calling to Montgomery. He wants to not get too involved in order to not create to much confusion. He said he’s told others in the building it’s been a challenge for him to back off. That said, he does believe he will be more involved. The different terminology Montgomery uses makes it difficult for Freeze to get involved. It doesn’t seem like a situation where Freeze doesn’t trust Montgomery, but he has had some implicit criticism of Montgomery in this press conference.

– Freeze said the offense is still looking for “some swagger.” The most positive attitude player on offense has been Luke Deal, Freeze said.

– On Holden Geriner, Freeze said it is good to see him getting a chance to get into a game like this on the road against Texas A&M. Said Geriner hasn’t had a lot of chances to get “quality reps.” But said Geriner was inaccurate and needs more experience to become more accurate. It’s hard to find him time to play.
