Kentucky murder suspect arrested when Leeds police chase ends in Irondale crash

Leeds police say a murder suspect will eventually be on his way back to Kentucky after he was caught following a traffic chase.

Police Chief Paul Irwin said Lamykel Antonio Jones, 30, of Birmingham, faces charges of a parole violation for murder – domestic violence, drug trafficking, first degree receiving stolen property, and first degree promoting contraband.

He is currently being held without bond in Jefferson County Jail awaiting extradition. He also faces felony eluding, certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm, obstructing justice using a false identity, drug possession and first degree marijuana possession.

According to Irwin, the incident began when officers attempted a traffic stop on Sept. 6 on U.S. 78 westbound.

A chase began until the vehicle wrecked in the 2600 block of Crestwood Boulevard in Irondale.

The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot before being taken into custody. A passenger was taken into custody at the crash scene without incident. The vehicle contained cash, marijuana, promethazine codeine and two firearms.

According to police, Jones gave false information to conceal his real name. It was later they discovered he was wanted in Kentucky on the murder and drug charges.

“By the actions of this individual, it was determined that he does not belong in society because he has been convicted of murder and put a lot of lives in danger here in the State of Alabama,” Irwin said.

“He drove with complete disregard for the safety of any other person including himself and there were two firearms in the vehicle, and one contained a drum. Fortunately, no one was involved in the accident except for these criminals, and they were not able to utilize their weapons against our officers.”

The passenger, Antoine Tavon Reed, is charged with drug possession and second degree marijuana possession. He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $11,000 bond.

Irondale police assisted in the arrest.
