NFL Week 3 Falcons vs. Lions odds preview

The Falcons roll into Detroit with a perfect start in hand, having outclassed the Panthers in their season opener and edged the Packers by a point last week.

Atlanta fans will be hoping to see more flashes of brilliance from rookie running back Robinson, who so far looks a natural at the NFL level already. The No. 8 overall pick has started his NFL career with a pair of dynamic performances and put in a 124-yard rushing performance against Green Bay including the key fourth-down run that set up the winning field goal in the 25-24 win.

Meanwhile, after the Lions shocked the world by beating the defending Super Bowl champions the Kansas Chiefs in the season’s very first game, they were brought back down to earth with a 37-31 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks at home last week. In that loss, quarterback Jared Goff threw his first interception in 384 pass attempts, ending the third-longest streak in NFL history.

Detroit may be without their leading rusher David Montgomery for this one, after he left the field in the fourth quarter against Seattle. He has not practiced this week.

Kickoff at Ford Field is noon CT. The host Lions are the 3-point favorites.

NFL Week 3 Falcons vs. Lions best bet: Lions -3 (-120 or better)

Sure, the Falcons have started hot, but that does come with an asterisk in the fact that they have so far faced two inexperienced quarterbacks on home turf. Going up against Goff and the Lions in their own backyard is something else entirely.

The Lions have not only home advantage and more experience, but the fiery motivation to rebound after losing their home opener last week. Throw in the fact that Atlanta has lost six straight road games and have been fairly one-dimensional in their reliance on running, and the Lions’ spread of -3 at as good as -115 doesn’t look too discouraging. If you want to push the boat out, DraftKings has Detroit at -3.5 at +100.

NFL Week 3 Falcons vs. Lions player prop: Desmond Ridder under 196.5 passing yards (-115 or better)

Desmond Ridder is certainly a talented QB but this will be the stiffest challenge of his season so far. The two-time AAC Offensive Player of the Year has rushed 11 times through two games, but the Detroit defense, while a little ropey all-round, has been pretty sturdy against the running game so far.

The Falcons have looked a little too one-dimensional with their tendency to run the ball so far this year, and Dan Campbell and Co. will have a focused plan on how to stop that happening. That may force Ridder to rely on his arm more, and we haven’t had much evidence so far of how he will fare in that situation.

NFL Week 3 Falcons vs. Lions best bet: Falcons under 21.5 points (-118 or better)

OK, so Robinson is an early offensive rookie of the year candidate with 255 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown in his first two NFL games and is averaging 15 attempts per game with several yards per carry.

But if, as expected, the Lions — already a higher calibre of opponent — find a way to lock down Atlanta’s running game, what’s the alternative? Relying on Ridder to throw missiles and find opponents from range. The Falcons are due a loss. The Lions will come out prepared on both sides of the ball and their opponents’ offense will struggle as a result.
