Everything Hugh Freeze told ‘College GameDay’ ahead of Texas A&M game: ‘We’re still not clicking’

We haven’t seen the best of the Auburn Tigers, according to coach Hugh Freeze.

Freeze, who joined “College GameDay” on Saturday, previewed his Tigers’ SEC openers at Texas A&M with the popular college football pregame show.

He openly wondered if Texas A&M knew it was in the SEC.

Here’s what he had to say:

On offense, QB Payton Thorne:

“We still are not clicking on all cylinders for sure. We didn’t get him here until the summer. We didn’t get half our receivers here until the summer. It’s not always the quarterback that is the issue. Our routes are not run at the right depth. They aren’t running the right stems against the right coverages. We’re still working to get that more consistent. I think we got better this past week, and, hopefully, that shows today.

“First, Payton has to take care the ball. He hasn’t done that in the last two games. He’s done some nice things also, but, obviously, when you’re playing the level of next three games, you can’t turn the ball over. He’s a competitive dude. I expect him to play well today.

On the defense:

“We played well on defense to this point, but we haven’t been tested to the level we will be today.

“Their quarterback is playing at a high level. There receivers are NFL-type dudes. We’re down Keionte Scott and Austin Keys, who are, truthfully, two of our better players. We’re going to have to play some freshmen who will be really good at times as we build this program, but they are going to get baptized in the SEC environment pretty quick today.”

On Jimbo Fisher and Bobby Petrino:

“Bobby does an incredible job with scheme as does Jimbo and whoever is doing now, both of them or so. They get big and cause you to match gaps, but they get big to throw it. It isn’t easy to defend. You just hope somehow to keep their explosive plays down.”

Meanwhile, it is being reported that preseason All-SEC corner Nehemiah Pritchett is slated to make his season debut on Saturday against the Texas A&M Aggies. Pritchett has collected 93 tackles and 2 INTs in his college career.

Pritchett has missed the first 3 games of the season with an undisclosed injury.
