Alexander City woman, 22, killed in two-vehicle east Alabama crash

An Alexander City woman died as a result of a two-vehicle crash Friday morning in Coosa County.

Sgt. Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said the incident happened at about 8:35 a.m. Friday on Alabama 9 near the 151 mile marker, approximately 6 miles west of Alexander City.

Savannah Y. Gilbert, 22, was driving a 2023 Hyundai Elantra that collided head-on with the 2010 Mercedes-Benz, driven by Gary T. Ledwell, 69, of Grapeland, Texas.

Gilbert was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gary Ledwell and Nancy C. Ledwell, 72, also of Grapeland, Texas, a passenger in the Mercedes, were both transported to Russell Medical Center in Alexander City for treatment.

Troopers with the ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
