Birmingham police release bodycam footage of arrest involving spitting man

Birmingham police today released body cam footage from the arrest of a man Wednesday accused of spitting on people, including an officer.

A video taken by a woman who was on her lunch break showed a Black officer chasing a Black man. “He spitted on him,” she said.

On the video, the officer eventually catches up with the man and they struggle, with the officer punching him several times.

The woman’s video has been shared tens of thousands of times on Facebook. (Warning: This includes vulgar language)

According to police, Theodore Williams, 28, of Irondale, has been charged with assault with bodily fluids, physical harassment, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He is being held in the Birmingham City Jail.

In a news release, police said the incident began at about 12:55 p.m. in Underwood Park, at 2621 10th Ave. S.

Four officers responded to reports of a Black man wearing a black jacket and blue jeans walking around spitting on people. The four officers were at separate locations.

While two officers were gathering information from a victim, two other officers saw Williams, who matched the clothing description given by victims, walking in the 2500 block of 10th Avenue South.

As they approached Williams, he fled from the officers on foot. At this point, the other two officers at the park drove to the 2300 Block of 10th Avenue South where they saw Williams walking.

Of those two police officers, one approached Williams, who struck him and fled on foot. The other officer pursued him and unsuccessfully used his Taser.

When Williams continued onto Magnolia Avenue, he stopped and confronted the officer chasing him and spit on him.

The officer took Williams to the ground and “delivered multiple closed fist strikes” before handcuffing him, police said.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue treated Williams and he was transported him to a local hospital to be checked out by medical staff, before being taken to jail.

“The Birmingham Police Department is committed to maintaining a positive relationship with our community through transparency and open dialogue,” a statement read.
