Thursday HS Roundup, Scores: Cam Coleman, Central roll again

Class 7A No. 2 Central-Phenix City scored 28 points in the first quarter on a pair of runs, a pass and a punt return to gain a quick — and insurmountable lead — over J.A.G., formerly Jeff Davis, on Thursday night at Garrett-Harrison Stadium in Phenix City.

The Red Devils got on the scoreboard first with a 22-yard pass from Andrew Alford to Daylyn Upshaw with 9:40 left in the initial quarter. Zack Simmons-Brown followed with a nine-yard touchdown run with 6:54 left. Tristan Williams then scored on a 33-yard run to make the score 21-0 at the 3:38 mark. The final score came on an 18-yard punt return by Alabama commit Red Morgan with 1:13 left in the first quarter.

Central scored three more times in the second quarter to up its lead to 48-0. All three touchdowns came on passes to Texas A&M commit Cam Coleman. Coleman caught passes from Alford of 25, 33 and 5 yards.

Coleman ended the half – and his night – with three catches for 63 yards with three touchdowns.

Alford completed 9-of-10 passes for 136 yards with four touchdowns. Simmons-Brown ran twice for 46 yards with a touchdown to lead Central’s runners.

Central scored its final points in the third quarter on a 27-yard run by backup quarterback Carter Frieberg. The second half was played under a running clock.

Central’s first team did not play in the second half. The offense finished with 299 total yards, 120 rushing on 12 carries and 179 passing yards. The Central defense held J.A.G. to 12 total yards, minus-35 rushing yards and 47 passing yards.

Central is 5-0 overall and 4-0 in Class 7A, Region 2. The Red Devils take on Dothan High next week at Garrett-Harrison Stadium. J.A.G. (0-5) is idle next week. The Jaguars have been outscored 227-52 this year.
