Nick Saban tells ESPN he promised 3 Alabama quarterbacks a chance to play

Nick Saban said Jalen Milroe was “initially frustrated” when he found out Alabama would play two other quarterbacks last Saturday at South Florida.

The decision came, according to ESPN’s Chris Low, after “(Saban) had promised the three quarterbacks he would give them all chances in games.”

“If anybody’s feeling angry or feeling disrespected, this is the time to do something about it,” Saban told Low per the report published Thursday night, days ahead of the top-15 matchup between Alabama and Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss.

The Crimson Tide re-named Milroe as its starting quarterback publically on Monday. Saban said he believes the process, and Milroe’s response in leading the Tide from the sidelines last Saturday, should be “helpful” for the third-year quarterback.

Saban had previously said that Alabama has evaluated its players in practice throughout the week before determining which ones play on Saturday. Milroe started Alabama’s first game against Middle Tennessee State, cruising to a win with five touchdowns. He then struggled with two interceptions against Texas, which Saban said Milroe has “learned from.”

“The one thing that we’ve always talked about is you make enough good plays, but you’ve got to eliminate the devastating plays, the ones that are killers,” Saban told ESPN.

Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner started against the Bulls and completed five of 14 passes for 34 yards. He also ran it twice for 11 yards. The Tide offense never got into a rhythm against USF and Buchner was benched for Ty Simpson in the second quarter.

Simpson, who had little time in the pocket, threw for 73 yards on five-of-nine passing. He also ran for one touchdown. On Wednesday night, Simpson was named Milroe’s backup.

Alabama kicks off against the Rebels and former defensive coordinator Pete Golding at 2:30 p.m. on CBS.
