SEC Football by the Numbers: Top 10 from Week 9

During the ninth week of the SEC’s 2022 season, Arkansas defeated Auburn 41-27, Georgia defeated Florida 42-20, Missouri defeated South Carolina 23-10, Ole Miss defeated Texas A&M 31-28 and Tennessee defeated Kentucky 44-6 in conference games. Here are 10 numbers about the SEC’s Week 9 games:

1 Texas A&M game has included more rushing yards for the Aggies’ opponent than Saturday’s 31-28 loss to Ole Miss did. The Rebels ran for 390 yards on 63 carries against Texas A&M. On Nov. 28, 2003, Texas had 393 yards on 60 rushing attempts in a 46-15 victory over the Aggies. In that game, Longhorns RB Cedric Benson ran for 283 yards and four TDs on 35 carries. On Saturday, Ole Miss RB Quinshon Judkins ran for 205 yards and one TD on 34 carries. Between the two games, Texas A&M allowed four players to rush for 200 yards in a game – Auburn RB Cameron Artis-Payne with 221 on Nov. 8, 2014, Alabama RB Derrick Henry with 236 on Oct. 17, 2015, Louisville QB Lamar Jackson with 226 on Dec. 30, 2015, and LSU RB Derrius Guice with 285 on Nov. 25, 2016.

2 SEC running backs became the first players in the conference to reach 1,000 rushing yards in the 2022 season on Saturday. Arkansas’ Raheim Sanders ran for 171 yards on 16 carries in the Razorbacks’ 41-27 victory over Auburn to boost his season stats to 1,041 yards and seven TDs on 156 carries. Ole Miss’ Quinshon Judson ran for 205 yards and one TD on 34 carries in the Rebels’ 31-28 victory over Texas A&M to boost his season stats to 1,036 yards and 13 TDs on 180 carries.

3 Plays from scrimmage involving Georgia TE Brock Bowers have gained at least 70 yards, tied with Louisiana-Monroe WR Tyrone Howell for the most in the nation this season. Bowers caught a 73-yard TD pass in the Bulldogs’ 42-20 victory over Florida on Saturday. Bowers also had a 78-yard TD reception in a 48-7 victory over South Carolina on Sept. 17 and a 75-yard TD run in a 39-22 victory over Kent State on Sept. 24. Against Florida, Bowers had five receptions for 154 yards and one TD. Bowers broke the Georgia record for receiving yards in a game against Florida, which had been 140 by Shannon Mitchell in a 33-26 loss on Oct. 30, 1993.

4 Opponents have scored at least 40 points against Auburn in 2022, the most in one season in the program’s history. Arkansas became the fourth in its 41-27 victory on Saturday against Auburn, which allowed a third consecutive opponent to reach 40 points for the first time. Three opponents had scored 40 or more points against Auburn in 1948, 2011 and 2012. This season, Auburn lost to Penn State 41-12 on Sept. 17, 42-10 to Georgia on Oct. 8 and 48-34 to Ole Miss on Oct. 15 before Saturday’s setback against Arkansas. Auburn had had only two other instances in which it had allowed at least 40 points in back-to-back games – and only once in the same season. In 2001, Auburn defeated Louisiana Tech 48-41 on Oct. 20 and lost to Arkansas 42-17 on Oct. 27. Auburn ended the 1948 season with a 55-0 loss to Alabama and started the 1949 season with a 40-7 loss to Ole Miss.

14 TD receptions for Tennessee WR Jalin Hyatt to set a school single-season record after he had five receptions for 138 yards and two TDs in Saturday’s 44-6 victory over Kentucky. Hyatt broke the record of 13 established by WR Marcus Nash in 1997. Hyatt has 11 TD receptions in the Volunteers’ past four games, and he is the first player in Tennessee history with multiple TD receptions in four consecutive games. Hyatt has four more TD receptions than any other player in the nation this season.

26 Consecutive games in which it led at the end of the first quarter had been won by Texas A&M under coach Jimbo Fisher, a spotless streak that ended on Saturday. The Aggies lost to Ole Miss 31-28 after entering the second quarter with a 14-7 lead. Under Fisher, Texas A&M has a 26-1 record in games that it led after the first quarter and an 11-18 record in games that it did not.

32 Years since Tennessee beat a ranked SEC opponent as badly as it did Kentucky on Saturday, when the Volunteers downed the No. 19 Wildcats 44-6. It was Tennessee’s most lopsided victory against a ranked SEC rival since the Vols beat No. 9 Florida 45-3 on Oct. 13, 1990. In its win over the Wildcats, Tennessee gained 422 yards to end a streak of 11 games in which Kentucky’s opponents had failed to reach 400. Before Saturday, the most recent team to reach 400 yards against the Wildcats was Tennessee, which had 612 in its 45-42 victory last season.

276 Rushing yards for Arkansas in its 41-27 victory over Auburn on Saturday. In this century, Auburn had not allowed more than 275 rushing yards in consecutive games until Georgia ran for 292 in a 42-10 victory on Oct. 8 and Ole Miss ran for 448 in a 48-34 victory on Oct. 15. Arkansas made it three games in a row. Since 2000, Auburn has a 2-18 record when allowing at least 275 rushing yards.

338 Passing yards and four TD passes for Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman in his first career start on Saturday. Before the Aggies’ 31-28 loss to Ole Miss, Weigman had 91 passing yards and no TD passes in his college career. He completed 28-of-44 passes with no interceptions against the Rebels. Weigman’s passing yardage is the most in a game for a true freshman in Texas A&M history. Weigman became the first Texas A&M player with at least 338 passing yards and four TD passes in a game since Nick Starkel had 499 and four in the Aggies’ 55-52 loss to Wake Forest in the Belk Bowl on Dec. 29, 2017.

555 Yards were gained by the Georgia offense in Saturday’s 42-20 victory over Florida. The Bulldogs posted their highest offensive output in the annual series, eclipsing the 502 yards gained in a 41-27 victory on Nov. 6, 1976. The Georgia total on Saturday included 106 yards and two TDs on 12 carries by RB Daijun Edwards, who recorded the Bulldogs’ first 100-yard rushing game of the 2022 season. That left Mississippi State as the only SEC team that hasn’t had a runner go for at least 100 yards in a game this season.
