College Football Week 4 picks: Alabama and UAB need to get better in a hurry

The most impressive team in college football last weekend was the South Alabama Jaguars. The Jags’ 33-7 shellacking of Oklahoma State was so dominant and complete that the Cowboys punted the ball with five and half minutes left in the game while trailing by four scores.

The Football Writers Association of America named South Alabama its team of the week. So did Cheez-It (which is not just a tasty snack but also apparently a good judge of football talent).

If those organizations chose a worst performance of the week, the Alabama Crimson Tide and UAB Blazers would both be strong contenders.

Alabama survived with a 17-3 win only because the competition at South Florida was so abysmal. UAB was not as fortunate, losing 41-21 to Louisiana in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as the final score would indicate.

This week, the Crimson Tide and Blazers have a date with perhaps the two best teams in the SEC. Both teams will have to play much better or they should prepare to be embarrassed.
