Maury Povich offers DNA test to Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson
Maury Povich has offered up his help to determine whether Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are indeed brothers.
Povich, the former host of “Maury,” released a video to E! News in which he said was willing to get to the bottom of speculation about McConaughey and Harrelson being half-brothers surfaced. It surfaced earlier this year when McConaughey admitted he had investigated his mother’s past.
The 53-year-old actor reacted to a Povich’s video.
“I would come out of retirement. We could do primetime, ‘DNA, Maury’s back with Woody and Matthew,’” Povich shared in the video. “I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair. Woody’s got my number. I’m ready.”
A smiling McConaughey reacted to the video.
“I like the way you’re thinking,” McConaughey said.
During a podcast interview, McConaughey shared that Harrelson’s father may have been with McConaughey’s mother during his parent’s divorce. At the time, McConaughey shared that during a family vacation, his mother had brought up a special connection she may have had with Harrelson’s father.
“The thing is we want to go and test,” Harrelson said on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in April.
“But for him, it’s a much more big deal. I mean, he feels like he’s losing a father. But I’m like, no you’re gaining a different father and a brother.”
The Oscar winner, who was teasing the pair’s new series “Brother from Another Mother,” also noted how their families often confuse them in photos.
“Well, I’ll just say there is some veracity to that thought because we talked to Ma’ Mac, Matthew’s legitimate mother, and she let us know one time … I mean, this is crazy. We were in Greece, we were watching the US team win the World Cup and I don’t know, I mentioned something about regrets,” Harrelson told Colbert.
“And I said, ‘You know, it’s odd that my father has no regrets.’ And I have known Ma’ Mac a long time, and she goes, ‘I knew … your father.’ And it was the ellipses I found a little troubling, or interesting. ‘I knew your father.’”
McConaughey and Harrelson first worked together on the 1999 film “EDtv” and have since reunited for the 2008 comedy film “Surfer, Dude” and in season one of HBO’s “True Detective.”
