Clothing store with location at Birmingham’s Summit bankrupt, closing

A women’s clothing store with a location in Birmingham is filing bankruptcy and will close.

TheStreet.com reported St. Louis-based Soft Surroundings is closing its 44 brick-and-mortar locations and its website. The chain has stores in 24 states, down from 80 before the COVID pandemic.

Soft Surroundings sells women’s apparel, home, shoes and accessories.

While its stores will close, Soft Surroundings digital business will be sold to Coldwater Creek. According to the report, the company has secured $18 million in debtor-in-possession financing from Gordon Brothers to pay vendors and employees during the transition period.

Soft Surroundings has about 646 employees, including 450 who work at its retail stores.
