When Madison County cut a check for $3,064,116.13 for Madison County Schools in August, it should be no surprise that it was the biggest check from county coffers.

The county school system has received the biggest check issued by Madison County nine out of the past 10 months according to a list obtained by the Lede.

The lone exception? Madison County cut a $13.5 million check to Southstate Bank in July. That was an interfund repayment – transfers among funds in separate bank accounts – according to County Attorney Jeff Rich.

Madison County Schools only ranked third on the list in July with a $2.98 million payout. The school system receives about $3 million a month from the county’s school distribution.

Also ranking ahead of county schools that month was AXON Enterprise, which received a $5.4 million check for body cameras, tasers, software and support for the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.

Madison County Schools isn’t the only school district receiving a sizeable check from the county each month. Huntsville City Schools received the county’s second highest check in August – a payout of $1,826,719.64.
