IRS hiring 3,700 agents earning about $125,000 to target high-income earners
The Internal Revenue Service is beefing up personnel for what it describes as “expanded enforcement work” focusing on high-income earners and large corporations.
Some 3,700 compliance positions are being added at 250 locations nationwide, with an emphasis on specialized technical positions that focus on audits. The staffing is part of the overall effort to add tax service employees that came as a result of the Inflation Reduction Act, the agency said.

“Our first wave of hiring focused on taxpayer service positions to help improve our phone and in-person assistance. This next wave of hiring will help the IRS add key talent like tax accountants to help reverse a decade-long decline of audits for the wealthy as well as complex partnerships and corporations,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said. “These new employees will be focused on higher-income and complex tax areas like partnerships, not average taxpayers making less than $400,000.”
According to the IRS, the positions are for mid-career professionals and will rank as GS-13 in the federal civil service system, translating into an annual salary of about $125,000. Jobs are open to any degree but must include up to 30 semester hours in accounting. You can see the job listings here.
