Jamar Malone threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more, and Nick Clark ran for two scores as Daphne routed host Davidson 56-14 in Class 7A, Region 1 action on Friday night in Mobile.

Malone’s three touchdown passes covered 18 yards to RJ Dailey and 29 and 24 yards to Scoot Myles. He scored on a pair of 6-yard runs and finished 22-of-29 passing for 344 yards and 59 yards on seven rushes.

Clark, meanwhile, logged 14 carries for 110 yards, while freshman quarterback Jaylyn Thibodeaux had a touchdown run for Daphne (3-0, 2-0 in region play).

The Trojans outgained Davidson 547-258 in total yards.

“The guys came out and did a fantastic job,” Daphne head coach Kenny King said. “They worked hard all week, and we were excited to see them come out. Jamar has done a heck of a job, and he’s become a leader for us. I know that Nick is happy that he’s in the backfield, because it frees him up to do some things, too.

“Nick is our workhorse. He’s the leader of this team and we count on him,” King continued. “Coming into his senior year we knew what he was about, so we’re excited about him being successful tonight.”

“It starts with my line,” Clark said. “With my line doing what they got to and my quarterback (Malone) doing what he’s got to, I’m trusting everybody. The defense’s doing its job, and you got to finish every time.”

DJ Butler was the bright spot for Davidson, rushing for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 14 rushing carries. In addition, defensively Davidson was its own worst enemy, committing nine penalties in the first half — three of them coming on the first defensive series of the game.

“It was very tough,” Warriors head coach Rick Cauley said. “Their quarterback (Malone) is as good a player as you’ll see. The more he plays, he’ll get better. We gave them 40 yards of defensive offsides early, and we had a whole lot of undisciplined stuff, and you’re not going to beat Daphne doing that.”

Daphne jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead when Clark scored on a 2-yard run and Malone hit Dailey on the 18-yard touchdown pass. In the second quarter, when Malone had to sit out a play after his helmet was knocked off after being tackled. Thibodeaux came in and scored on a 4-yard run.

Butler’s 1-yard touchdown run with 4:21 to go in the half narrowed the gap, and the two teams traded scores when Myles caught his 29-yard touchdown pass and Butler answered with a 65-yard touchdown run to make it 28-14. But Malone swung the momentum back the Trojans’ way when he scored on a 6-yard run with 41.8 seconds to go in the half.

Davidson would never get close again as Malone’s second touchdown run, which came with 8:08 left in the third quarter, made it 42-14. Clark’s 45-yard scoring run later in the quarter, and Myles’ 24-yard touchdown reception with 9:22 remaining ended the scoring.
