Jaquess Greene scored five touchdowns as Class 6A No. 5-ranked Muscle Shoals beat Athens 66-28 in a key Region 7 clash.

The junior had four TD runs and an 80-yard kick return for the host Trojans at J.F. Moore Stadium. His rushing touchdowns covered 6, 37, 1 and 64 yards.

Muscle Shoals (4-0 overall, 2-0 in region) also scored on Tarre Hampton’s 37-yard run, Cole Woods’ 74-yard pass to Jamir Goodloe, Woods’ 21-yard run and Jorrian Meade’s 65-yard run. Jorge Garcia kicked a 40-yard field goal. The Trojans led 31-21 at halftime.

The visiting Golden Eagles (3-1, 1-1) had a 10-yard pass from Brogan Gross to Jay’Shon Ridgle, John Mcintyre’s 3- and 2-yard runs, and Gross’ 7-yard run.

Muscle Shoals did not punt or commit a turnover. Athens committed three turnovers, two on interceptions.

“I thought Coach (Michael) Darden (the offensive coordinator) and his staff put together a great game plan,” Muscle Shoals head coach Scott Basden said. “And I thought the kids played really hard.

“Defensive coordinator Coach (Stephen) Lawler and his staff had a great game plan. And we knew Athens was explosive offensively.”

Play of the game: After Athens scored on Ridgle’s catch, Greene took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to the end zone. Garcia’s kick put the Trojans up 24-7 with 8:18 to go in the second quarter.

Stat sheet: Muscle Shoals – Greene had 13 carries for 186 yards and four touchdowns, plus his kick return TD. Hampton had seven carries for 123 yards and a touchdown. Woods had six carries for 67 yards and a touchdown and completed 7-of-12 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown. Athens – Ridgle, a South Alabama commit, made 11 catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Gross had five carries for 49 yards and a touchdown and completed 26-of-47 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown with one interception.
