NFL Thursday night: DeVonta Smith joins Hutson, Jones
The Philadelphia Eagles used four takeaways, 259 rushing yards and the two longest receptions of DeVonta Smith’s NFL career to defeat the Minnesota Vikings 34-28 on Thursday night.
Running back D’Andre Swift led the Eagles’ ground game with 175 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries. Philadelphia had 48 rushing attempts in the game and an 18:56 advantage in time of possession.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts connected with Smith for a 54-yard gain in the first quarter and a 63-yard touchdown as Philadelphia took a 27-7 lead with 10:54 left in the third quarter.
Before Thursday night, the longest reception of Smith’s NFL career had been a 46-yarder in a 34-10 victory over the New York Giants on Dec. 26, 2021.
Smith had four receptions for 131 yards and one touchdown to become the third Alabama alumnus to gain at least 130 yards on four or fewer receptions in an NFL game.
On Nov. 19, 1939, Don Hutson had 149 yards and one touchdown on three receptions in the Green Bay Packers’ 28-0 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers.
On Nov. 6, 2011, Julio Jones had 131 yards and two touchdowns on three receptons in the Atlanta Falcons’ 31-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
Smith also recovered the Vikings’ onside kick with 1:09 left in the game.
In contrast to the Eagles, Minnesota had nine rushing attempt in the game. Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 31-of-44 passes for 364 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions against a Philadelphia secondary that was missing two starters. Minnesota wide receiver Justin Jefferson had 11 receptions for 159 yards.
Minnesota lost four fumbles in the game, including one that went for a touchdown when Jefferson fumbled through the end zone and another that set up a Philadelphia touchdown by putting the Eagles on the Vikings 7-yard line.

In addition to Smith, 15 other players from Alabama high schools and colleges were involved in the Minnesota-Philadelphia game:
· Eagles safety Reed Blankenship (West Limestone) was designated a game-day inactive. Blankenship sustained a rib injury in Philadelphia’s 25-20 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday and did not practice this week.
· Eagles cornerback James Bradberry (Pleasant Grove, Samford) was designated as a game-day inactive. Bradberry is in the NFL’s concussion protocol.
· Zach Cunningham (Pinson Valley) started at weakside linebacker for the Eagles. Cunningham led Philadelphia with eight tackles and recorded one tackle for loss.
· Landon Dickerson (Alabama) started at left guard for the Eagles.
· Eagles offensive lineman Jack Driscoll (Auburn) did not record any stats.
· Eagles linebacker Rashaan Evans (Auburn High, Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
· Jalen Hurts (Alabama) started at quarterback for the Eagles. Hurts completed 18-of-23 passes for 193 yards with one touchdown and one interception and ran for 35 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Hurts scored on 1-yard plunges with 2:44 left in the first half and 13:53 left in the third quarter.
· Josh Jobe (Alabama) started at cornerback for the Eagles. Jobe made six tackles in his first NFL start.
· Vikings running back DeWayne McBride (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
· Nicholas Morrow (Huntsville) started at linebacker for the Eagles. Morrow made three tackles, registered one quarterback hit and recovered a fumble on a Minnesota punt return. Morrow was on the practice squad in the first week of the season, but was signed to the active roster on Tuesday after linebacker Nakobe Dean was injured in Sunday’s season-opening game.
· Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens (Spain Park) dressed for the game but did not play.
· Eagles cornerback Eli Ricks (Alabama) did not record any stats in his NFL debut.
· Eagles punter Arryn Siposs (Auburn) averaged 37.5 yards on four punts, with a net of 32.8. Siposs had a 40-yard punt that was returned 20 but ended in a fumble that the Eagles recovered at the Philadelphia 27-yard line, a 44-yarder downed at the Minnesota 30, a 35-yarder for a fair catch at the Minnesota 14 and 31-yarder returned for minus-1 yard to the Minnesota 17. Siposs was elevated from the practice squad to play on Thursday night.
· Eagles offensive lineman Tyler Steen (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.
· Eagles wide receiver Quez Watkins (Athens) left the game with a hamstring injury.
With a 2-0 record, Philadelphia will visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the Week 3 Monday night game at 7:15 p.m. CDT Sept. 25. With an 0-2 record, Minnesota will host the Los Angeles Chargers at noon Sept. 24.
