Jimmy Kimmel: Charles Barkley ‘my favorite guest’

Charles Barkley gets laughs from everyone, including the funniest people on the planet.

The former Auburn and NBA star came up on the latest episode of the new podcast “Strike Force Five,” wherein late-night talk show hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and John Oliver team up to support their striking writers and out-of-work production staffs.

The hosts share insights into their professional and personal lives, including behind-the-scenes stories about making their respective shows. During the latest episode, “Awards Show Screwups, Late Night Multiverse & Batman Wants to Murder Kimmel,” they discuss some of their favorite comedy bits from the long history of late-night television, not including their own shows.

John Oliver, the host of HBO’s “Last Week with John Oliver,” also talked about the TNT studio show “Inside the NBA” as one of his favorites. He said the show rekindles some of the late-night energy he grew up watching, singling out Barkley as one of the show’s funniest personalities.

“What I love about some of those really early late-night clips is the sense of genuine chaos in the air, and I’ve only ever seen that replicated by TNT’s halftime show,” Oliver said. “It’s so, so good.”

Kimmel and Oliver said their wives will watch the show with them, noting you don’t even have to watch the game the network is broadcasting to enjoy the antics of Barkley and co-stars Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson. “So rarely are they talking about the game,” Oliver said. “It’s just free-form improvisation. There’s fighting, bickering, back-referencing things they have not planted. It is truly one of the best shows on television.”

Meyers chimed in, saying during a bad game, the sports stars will often stop paying attention to the game and resort to making fun of each other.

“It’s incredible,” Oliver continued. “And they’ll do the thing that you’re never supposed to do, which is say ‘This game stinks. I don’t want to talk about this. I want to talk about …’ and then basically, whatever the first thing that comes to their mind is.

“I saw Shaq get pushed into a Christmas tree. That’s a solid late-night bit, and that definitely didn’t seem planned. They had a game for a while called ‘Who He Play For?’ They would just put up an image of a player and [Barkley] would have to guess what team he played for. And I remember there was one time where they twisted it. They said, ‘OK, what about this guy? Who he play for? Barkley couldn’t get it, and [Ernie Johnson] went, ‘I’ll give you a clue. He’s playing in the game that we’re watching right now.’”

Kimmel then anointed Barkley as an all-time go-to person to have on his and other shows.

“I think he’s my favorite guest of all the guests,” Kimmel said. “There’s nobody I enjoy talking to more than Charles.”

Colbert added, “He’s fantastic.”

Kimmel then told an anecdote about a Barkley appearance on his show when a publicist called beforehand to request they not discuss drinking or gambling on the air. Kimmel agreed, noting there were plenty of other topics they could cover, but said that rule went out the window as soon as the segment began. “Charles sits down and immediately starts talking about drinking and gambling,” Kimmel said.

Meyers added one more story, about a time Barkley hosted his former show “Saturday Night Live.”

“He hosted ‘SNL.’ Someone had just gotten married,” Meyers said. “He said congratulations to them, and Charles said, ‘Did you get a prenup?’ And they said no, and he said, ‘You will next time.’ It’s so funny.”

Barkley has hosted “SNL” four times, between 1993 and 2018. He has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” many times.
