Hyundai creates 22,000 Alabama jobs, $3 billion in earnings, report finds

Hyundai has created up to 22,200 jobs and generated $3.06 billion in earnings in Alabama, according to a new report.

The Center for Automotive Research, an independent nonprofit that researches the automotive industry, released a report this week on the Korean automaker’s economic impact on the U.S.

According to the report, Hyundai and its independent dealers in 2021 added $20.1 billion in private earnings to the U.S. economy, including $2.8 billion in federal and state taxes.

Alabama is home to the company’s only motor vehicle assembly plant in the United States, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA), in Montgomery. It employs about 3,600 hourly and salaried workers and makes the Elantra (Avante), Sonata, and Santa Fe. The production of Santa Cruz and Tucson began in 2021 and gradually replaced the plant’s compact and mid-size passenger cars production.

The plant also produces more than a half-million engines, some of which power vehicles made at Kia’s assembly plant in nearby West Point, Ga.

In 2021, Alabama received $2.3 billion in new capital investment to support HMA’s continuous operations in Alabama.

Earlier this year, HMMA rolled out its first electric vehicle, the Genesis Electrified GV70 SUV, the first Genesis model assembled outside of South Korea. This qualified the company for the new federal income tax credit for electric vehicles made in North America.

According to the report, about 22,200 direct and indirect jobs comes from Hyundai in Alabama, meaning that there are 3.9 additional jobs in Alabama for every worker hired by HMA and its dealer network in state.

The company anticipates another 400 new hires in Alabama related to its electric car and battery projects in Alabama and Georgia, according to the report.
