Week 3 Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of Week chosen
Hoover’s Jamar Moultrie earned a close victory in the Week 3 Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of the Week poll, much as his Bucs took a close win on the field over city rival Spain Park.
Moultrie became this season’s first defensive player to take the honors – and the top three finishers all played on the defensive side of the ball.
Moultrie, a junior cornerback, got 3,248 of 17,201 votes – 19 percent – in the balloting. Moultrie blocked a field goal and an extra point in the 28-20 win at Spain Park. He also had a 35-yard kickoff return, registered five tackles and had an interception for the Class 7A No. 9 Bucs.
Ramsay linebacker QB Reese was second in the voting at 12 percent after recording 14 tackles, with one behind the line of scrimmage and returning an interception 70 yards for a touchdown in a 65-6 rout at Jasper.
T’Man Threatt of Carver finished third after his three interceptions, including a pick-6, and a touchdown on 80 yards rushing for the 2-0 Rams.
Voting for the Hollis Wright Birmingham Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.
In Week 3, more than 34,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
